Rear Bumper Trim

The black plastic/rubber trim has come off my rear bumper, leaving the bolts/studs that hold it in place sticking out. Apart from the fact that this looks damned ugly I believe it will fail the MOT as these will be dangerous should I reverse into a pedestrian.

So since we are now approaching MOT time, (yikes!) I need to do something about it, so what are my options?

I have managed to get the remnents of the little brackets out of the molding and was wondering about replacing these. Looking at the PET (see below) I think these are part 11A which doesn't seem to have a part number given. If I follow this approach I think I will have to take the bumper off, remove all the old bolts, then slide new parts into the molding with the bolts in place, then I can re-attach to the bumper and put the bumper back.

Alternatively I could chop off the bolts, and fill in the holes or apply a bodge and try to bond the molding in place. Am really interested in other's thoughts on and/or experiences of sorting this out.

replace the bumper ? or leave it off for the MOT ? it has to come off the replace the strip anyway i think.

11A is the cap where the tow hook goes on later models (see here http://www.design911.co.uk/fu/pt69_727_1032_-cma81-cmo123/Porsche/944-1982-91/Parts---Screws---Washers-etc/ ).
The bolts are not sold separetely ,you need the complete molding . You either buy a new one or get a used bumper and take the molding off that one.
Saw this a few days ago http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Porsche-944-1989-Bumper-Trim-/130690657741?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item1e6dc52dcd

The clips/bolts are not available separately-they come with the rubber, priced at well over £100. We took the opportunity to remove the bumper, fill the holes and get it repainted. Nice smooth look....

Depends what you want it to look like I guess.

I took mine off because I wanted to clean up the look of the back of the car but some will prefer it on.

I'd have thought you could glue the trim back on without too much difficulty - I presume that the studs have pulled out of the molding - certainly well enough to pass the MOT.

I don't think you will get the parts to fix the molding though - you need a new molding with the studs intact, then put that on the bumper I think. That's how it is on a Turbo anyway.

The car will pass its MOT with the bumper removed, provided that you remove the brackets also, which isnt difficult. The easiest solution will be to wait until a bumper in the correct colour is listed on eBay and buy that. This is what I did for my 2.7 and the S2 bumper in Guards Red cost about £5 with a perfect later/larger style rubber trim.

Well that clears up the bracket parts then and I am tempted to go the nice smooth finish on the bumper, I think it looks nice.

It is shame I spent an afternoon cleaning out the rubber strip and getting rid of the disintigrated rust remains of the bolt heads.

Thanks chaps.

I replaced the rubber strip on my lux last year, about £45 from Porsche with club discount.

Alan.
