rear diffuser

still lurking, and still to find the right car. Have just seen one option which leads me to a couple of questions. How easy is to obtain and then fit the turbo style rear underbody diffuser.
On an unrelated point I pressume the most desireable seat material is leather or cloth leather combo, but what about the porsche insignified cloth, was this an option, the standrad, or limted edition choice. Is this Porsche cloth rare and desirable as the seller states

They appear on ebay quite frequently. DIY fitment guide here: http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/924-931-944-951-968/197467-new-valence-installation.html

I wouldn't have said that Porsche logo cloth seats were particularly rare.

I like the logo seats, they're definately not rare (both my cars had them, I think they were standard fitment or at least a no cost option, but I'm sure someone will be along with an options price list soon). They do tend to fade but are hard wearing and one of the 80's styles that still looks good today (especially in black).

The biggest downside with the rear valance is it's a pain to clean properly, but that shouldn't be enough to put you off one if you like the look.

Logo seats are one of the common options, I prefer them over pinstripe and they are very hard-wearing. What's rare is full-cloth, does the seller mean that the side bolsters are also cloth? More usual, prob 90% or more, have vinyl side bolsters. Often described as half-leather, wrongly.

Assuming it's a Lux you're considering, what about the original diffuser option instead of the turbo-style? I really like it.

I seem to recall that full cloth was an option, with the default (i.e. 'Nothing extra to pay, sir') being cloth centres and vinyl sides. (Which is actually the most sensible arrangement as the vinyl is harder-wearing than the cloth, and lasts longer than the leather, but that's by-the-by.)

I think that porsche logo cloth was a cost extra (as in, you paid more for it.)

Cloth door cards (as opposed to vinyl) was another cost extra (but may have been included as 'standard' for certain models of cars; I don't think I have ever seen an S2 or Turbo without it).

Then there was the 'leather' option, which is really leather fronts to the front seats and vinyl everywhere else. And the very, very rare 'full leather' - which was leather everywhere (including on the dashboard I think), and cost about £4500 extra when the car was new.

And then you throw the sports seats vs. 'comfort' seats issue into the mix.

NOTE - I could be wrong on a lot of this; it's working from memory of bits I have picked up over the years.

ETA: To the OP: The best advice when choosing a 944 is to choose the best one you can find, and not to worry about colour or interior. A really good car in a colour you are not that fond of is a much better bet than a ropey example with your perfect colour and interior. And bear in mind that the interior can be very easily changed as well - I put leather sports sets in mine and sold the old cloth comfort seats, and it cost me less than a hundred quid all in.

Good point. I have an '86 brochure which doesn't cover the S2, but it says this for the Lux's:

Electric drivers' seat - standard.
Leather interior - £1275.73
Leather seats - front and rear - £1635.78
Standard seat with electrical adjustment - drivers side - £363.78
passenger side - £544.43

Lumbar support for above options (not with Sport seats) - drivers side - £391.20
passenger side - £391.20

All cloth standard seats with cloth extended to bolsters - pair - £144.52
Partial leather front seats (facings only) - pair - £458.47
Sports seats with electric height adjustment - pair - £606.72
drivers side - £213.04

Heated seat for above sport seat options only - drivers side - £140.78
passenger side - £140.78

Cloth door panel inserts matching seat inlays (only with cloth seats) - £115.86.

So ... make of that what you will! Looks like there were numerous different leather options, and I'm not sure what the difference between them is.

As other folk have said, Logo cloth isn't that rare. As for desirability that really should be down to personal taste and condition. Quite often those selling 944's will put down certain details of their cars as being rare and desirable whereas in reality there are very few things that add to the appeal of a particular 944 (other than a turbocharger of course ! [;)]). These are old cars now so condition is the be all and end all really, with any individual features being the icing on the cake.

Would agree that if it is a Lux you are looking at, then a Toastrack rear diffuser is better than the later variety.

So based on Oli's post, was seat did you get as standard if you took NO options? (I guess it was logo cloth or pinstripe?!)

Yup, cloth with vinyl sides and bolsters. The full-cloth option at £144 per pair is a very cheap option on a Porsche, surprised not to see more often.

thanks for all the info. back to the 'main' part of the question. how challanging is it to fit the turbo style diffuser. is the toastrack option easier to fit. i take the point that this style would be more 'in keeping' with a lux

I have full cloth and door cards on my lux.

I fitted the turbo style valance to my car last month, once I'd got the hang of fitting the nutserts in underneath it was pretty straightforward. Drilling holes in the wings is a little daunting but take it easy and everything will work out. The toastrack style doesn't need the wings to be drilled so you can take it off if you don't like it without leaving any obvious damage on the car.

Cloth doorcards were a cost option. Full cloth seats seem to last longer because the two materials both give equally at their seam. Series two seats last longer too, because the seam is recessed with a hidden extension. Of all the materials used 'Script' seems to be the most durable too (apart from berber...).

I have 1 genuine turbo/S2 splitter in blue and 1 in Linen metallic up for grabs in good nick if you are on the lookout for one. They are reasonably easy to fit if you are handy with a drill!
