Rear Engine mounts Possible RS upgrade?

Hi folks, my engine mounts look like they're sagging a bit , also changing gear whilst braking hard is becoming difficult which is also a sign of worn mounts I believe.

My plan is to upgrade the components on the car when they need replacing and I noticed that the RS mounts are different, does anyone know if they are a straight swap, the mounts, bolt and washer are a lot cheaper than a standard 964 engine mount which would be an added bonus!!

Logan,

A lot depends on what you want to achieve. A few of us have been through this episode over the back end of last year so there's a heap of experience on here.

For the 964, the C2 and C4 use different handed mounts (there's also a difference between Coupe and Targa) - and they are ALL expensive. The RS mounts are solid so there is (much) more risk of vibration and noise being transferred to the cabin. Another alternative is to use the 993 C4 mounts which are still hydraulic but not handed - and still much cheaper.

Yet another possibility is to use pattern parts from the US. I only paid about £130 for a pair - including carriage. There are also the aftermarket alternatives from the likes of Wevo - and they sell two alternative hardness "pillows" (as they call them) so you have the choice of harder or softer.

I can certainly recommend a change. Mine were completely knackered and the new ones make a huge difference to the feel of the car as well as improving the gear change.

Hope that helps.

Regards

Dave

The RS mounts are a straight swap but when I changed mine they were coming out at the same price as the 964 originals. If you go the RS mount route I would strongly advise that you get the engine carrier strengthened by adding a gusset plate because the stiffening effect of the mounts could lead to the carrier cracking. Also, when removing the old mounts makes sure the nuts have been soaked in penetrating oil overnight so they are relatively easy to undo. Just using brute force with a breaker bar has been known to twist and damage the carrier.

The good experiences of Dave and others with the 993 mounts makes them a very cost effective solution for a 964 being used mostly on the road.

Guys, Thanks very much for your advice, the car is mainly used on the road so I think I'll either go down the 993 C4 mount route or possibly the Wevo mounts with the uprated gusset.

Hi

I fitted the 993 C4 mounts a couple of weeks back and they appear to be fine. Maybe a slight more vibration, but the car rides a lot better, no secondary bounce from the rear at high speed. I do have a strengthened rear mounting bar which maybe adding to the vibration slightly, but not excessive by any means. Total from Porsche was £225.00 for the pair.
