Rear Engine Oil seal

The rear main oil seal was leaking last year & replaced as part of the two year warranty, at only 14397 miles. I purchased an extended waranty & recently took the car in for a yearly oil and filter change, plus a general check before the warranty expired. Guess what, yes you've got it, the rear seal is leaking again ! The mileage is now 17,940. Is this a record ?

RMS replaced Oct 08 then again in Jan 09, less than 1,000 miles later - 997.1, 35k miles. Been fine since (I think), although there was no oil leak that I could see (i.e. no drips or burning oil smell).

It's called making easy money when you're not selling cars.

..... and the downside is that is scares the living daylights out of prospective buyers of 986 / 987 / 996 /997 !!!!

Oh and lets not forget it also helps to drive down resale pices too.

Greed by some and we pay the ultimate price.

Very true Peter, I also think its got a bearing with the ongoing warranty fiasco too..

You will see that I started a thread a few weeks ago confirming that my car has had the same problem twice within 6 months. Having got the car back from Cambridge OPC (Norwich did the first one) I am now getting intermittent instrument errors on the temperature gauge which I will now need them to look at.

The oil problem seems so common that I can not understand why Porsche are not dealing with the cause.

Porsche have released new versions of the seal and many find that it does cure it once and for all.
They have hopefully found a new soloution to the problem for the latest cars.... a new engine block - DFI [;)]

Tell everyone what the new seal is called with a parts number and then owners can ask an OPC/PGB to arrange for it to be fitted.

That would save time and energy, and increase the reputation of the marque!

Julian, OPCs will just fit the latest seal if you have an issue.
This has been totally blown out of proportion with the internet...

Its nothing to do with people arranging to have it fitted!!, although sometimes you get that feeling with the cover of warranty.
If it fails then it would be replaced, I wonder if that many would have been replaced had it not been under warranty??

However I agree that if its your car then it does seem like the world, should it leak.

Don't agree with your statement regarding the internet.

The internet has NOT blown this out of proportion.

The internet does NOT make the RMS happen.

The internet simply allows owners to share their experiences.

This is a long standing issue that Porsche have failed to (1) fix or (2) bury under the carpet.

With regards to warranty claims, it depends on the issue as to whether you get the latest version of the component - e.g. PCM 1.3 failiure will not result in a replacement with the current most up to date version.

It would be useful for owners to know what part number their RMS is being "fixed" with.
