rear hatch release cable

Hi Chaps

My sc has been so reliable that when I came to open the rear hatch (do you call it a bonnet or boot on one of these? [8|]) the other day I found that the cable had siezed!!

Are there any handy tips for releasing the back so that I can replace the cable and can anyone recommend a parts supplier [:)]

That can be tricky , firstly are you sure the cable is seized or is the lock badly adjusted? Either way the handle unscrews from the cable at the door end, recheck and post about more info about EXACTLY what has happened, ie does the cable pull work but the engine lid doesn't open or won't the cable move at all?
 
No movement on cable at all.

As the cable passes through the rear wing it looks pretty exposed and corroded; I've tried WD40 but still the same. It could be that the latch is siezed at the other end but I don't think so cos there isn't any play or slack to take up in the cable - it's just locked solid!
 
It does sound like the cable has seized then [:(] Try unscrewing the plastic release lever just twist anti-clockwise, this may free the corrosion, if it unscews try gripping the cable end with mole grips (protect the threads first if you can) and tug a little, I thought the cables were stainless steel but clearly not if it is seized and I've never heard of a seized cable here. Failing this look through the back of Porsche Post for Independents like Autofarm of J.Z. Machtech and seek further advice. If you look under the rear wing you can see this cable check to make sure it is not kinked or damaged somehow.

You need to check your oil more often Steve [:D]
 
I'm told that if you cut the release cable the rear latch lock is designed in such a way as to open automatically. Not something I've ever tried - can anyone else confirm this?
 
If the cable is cut it should spring open but this cable appears to be seized solid so would that method work?

I'll have a bit more of a play and see if any of the suggestions work - it's got to open somehow!

You're right about checking the oil but I've only done about 1000 miles this year so I've relied on the gauge on the dash - not a good move as it turns out [&:]
 
It's finally open!

I wasted quite a bit of time trying to get to the latch by taking the bumper etc off but could not get access so in the end I had to break the outer cable insde the rear wing and luckily the cable wasn't siezed there so I got it open.

Unfortunately, this now means that I need new inner and outer cables rather than just an inner which would have been much easier to fit [:mad:]

Who does mail order on bits like this?

I have been following this thread, well done in getting access to you engine bay.
I would try www.type911 and Porsche shop for new and Porscheapart albeit for second hand.

Man you've had a struggle with that, I've never heard of one being so stubborn before but well done, now check your oil. Also try Bert Gear

If not then you'll have to order from Porsche as it may not be a part worth carrying by Independents.
 
Thanks for the replies chaps. I've just ordered an inner cable for £12 but the outer is a solid tube that is dealer only but can be fabricated to fit so I'll have a go at that.
