Took me about 6 months to get mine quiet. The seal was not the issue...............sorry any of the issues!!
As Rob says start with the hatch pins and latches. If one isn't fully seated the hatch will rattle. New hatch pins can cure this, about £20. The old pins round off a bit and don't lock in as good after 20 years. Strip the latches and give them a good clean up and then re-grease them and then try and set up the length of the new pins and locate the latches. This is a bit fiddly but I found that loosening the hatch latch bolts, closing the hatch then climbing in and nipping the bolts worked quite well for the latches and it's trial and error for pin length.
Then if you have a bridge spoiler which you may well do on a '92 S2 then you have another myriad of potential squeak zones to attend too! The hockey sticks loosen off and are quite temperamental and fiddly to put right and then the spoiler itself will more than likely be loose. I ended up bonding mine in place as some of the fasteners were threaded and useless making removal impossible!
A new seal won't do any harm but in my experience unless you smell fumes in the cabin the seal is ok.

I'd guess that whether you replace it or not, the catches will be worth adjusting. If someone wants to do this with some pictures it's a very good thing to put in the tech articles! [

it is a loud sqeak (not a rattle), as though I have a parrot living in the headlining (maybe I should check that first...).
I did try and adjust the hatch pins a while ago, but one was siezed up and wouldn't budge, so I thought of the seal as an easy option to try.
I did wonder whether it was being caused by the glass moving on the frame (Id' heard that they can de-laminate), but my glass looks absolutely fine viewed from the outside.
A thread or note on how to fit new hatch pins would be really useful.

I then bought a new pair of pins and used the mole grips and plus-gas to get the remains of the old pin out, all hunky dory now, but that was a year ago so might do a little adjustment this weekend to check it is all still tight as it should be
