Rear hatch...which idiot designed that!

The (sort of) circlips which grip the lugs on the underside of the hatch & hold it shut are wedged in the open position. I've had this problem with my Lux but usually loosening off the assembly & wiggling it a bit and applying some oil would release them, as it has before with the S2 but not tonight! I can't wait for the hatch to fly open as I drive to work in the morning!

Any ideas as to how to free them without nuking the rear end of the car?

Te mechanism is operated by two rods which go from the rear of the hatch lock barrell, through the inside skin of the rear panel onto the sliding mechanism.

You should make sure that the hatch lock is not in the unlock position (unlikely, as otherwise they key would still be in there) and that the connecting rods are not jamming against something which is preventing them returning to the locked position. all you need to do this is remove the pastic retaining clips, be careful not to damage them [8|] & pull the carpet clear.

It sounds like it's just muck & grit that needs to be cleaned away, give it an overdose of WD40 and move each side of the mechanism by hand until it springs closed properly & easily
 
By the time of the S2 the hatch release was electric. The key just turns a solenoid and if you hold the key I think the release keeps opening and closing rather than stays open.
 
Once you've got it all cleaned off and then greased again, loosely reattach it to the car and shut the boot. This should then centralise it with the pins that come down from the hatch. Then tighten it up a bit more. The trick (as you've already stated) is not to overtighten, but when correct and with decent tailgate struts its great to just push the button in the car and have the boot slowly rise open [:D]

I clean and relube mine about once a year, it would probably just be easier to buy a new latch which is £25 from www.porscheshop.co.uk or maybe cheaper elsewhere if you shop around.
 
How weired I had this problem yesterday on my S2 when washing it. The pins wouldn'd lock in. I loosend the two bolts underneath the locking macanism then shut the boot and when i open it they were aligned and then tighten them up a bit more, but not too tight, they need to be slightly movable.
 
Thanks for your thoughts guys. I set off that morning and the hatch had come open twice before I'd gone 100 yds! I thought to hell with it and put my foot down (a little!) and the wind pressure shut it and it's stayed shut ever since. As it's hardly stopped raining and I haven't seen it in the daylight yet, I'll leave well alone for the moment but may well replace the latches.
