Rear Indicator Swimming Pool

Hi

Having had to use my beloved daily recently cos some uninsured lowlife biker ran into my M3 - I've noticed that the rear indicator lens has rapidly filled up and blown the bulb. As it doesnt go out in the rain normally it's never been a problem before.

Pretty sure this is a "known" problem but cant see the fix on the web

Any helpful person point me in the right direction please?

Hi Melv

Took off the unit, tipped the water out (harness was sopping wet - no wonder the bulbs were blowing) checked all the warm air pipes, dried inside with a hair dryer. Basically the top edge of the plastic has de-laminated allowing water in. Tried running a seam of clear superglue along the top but it looked cr*p so a new unit I suppose. Then one for the other side to match. Then a new rear centre panel.......Ho hum.

Funny I have a 964 body kit on my SC (all original parts at the rear) and I have a similar problem with the lens misting up , when I checked it out it had 'seperated' around the outside seam. These units are expensive but as the 964 is no longer being developed I guess we have to live with it. To make matters worse the centre light is vulnerable to heat from the exhaust.

NOTE - When drying the inside of the light fitting, if you use a hairdryer or similar device, let the fitting cool down before reassembly. Otherwise as it cools you will get condensation inside and guess what.....misty lens!

Just received two shiny new indicator units so I'll get those fitted tonight.

Even after the drying out scenario, the water had penetrated the short harness causing the contacts to rust and the indicator bulb kept blowing.

Hopefully the centre section wont have faded too much to be obviously a different colour.
