rear main seal issues

Took our 997 GT3 to Fearnsport for a geometry check after new tyres were fitted. Whilst the car was up in the air they noticed a fine film of oil around the rear main seal. They advised us to get this looked into. The car has been to the OPC we purchased it from who have said that the loss of oil is so minimal that Porsche UK would not cover it under warranty work.

We are now thinking of how to proceed with this. First we think a letter from the OPC confirming that the matter has been looked at and in their view does not require remedial action. Also a call to Porsche UK to confirm that this is their protocol for such a matter; and also requesting how they would treat a claim if the seal were to go in the future, particularly after the normal warranty has expired. Third, calls to other OPCs and independants to see if this is reasonable.

Whilst we have no intention of selling the car any time soon anyone getting our car PPI'd and spotting the oil around the RMS is not going to look so favourably on our car.

Is it acceptable for the RMS to leak at all? Advice please!

Hi Jan, that's a worry. I must admit though that the GT3's and Turbo's have the GT1 race-engine-derived 3.6 litre engine which is dry-sumped and completely different to the normal Carrera engines - And I didn't believe GT3's or Turbos had ever had RMS issues.

I agree with you with regards to a letter from the OPC confirming what the problem is (may not be RMS related), and their verdict - repair or not, before taking to PGB at Reading. If you want it fixed, I'd be inclined to push for repair, don't forget you've spent the best past of £xx on one of their flagship cars...
