Rear reflector upgrade

I have an ' 85 model Supersport with the fog lights attached to the rear valance.

Has anybody upgraded to the later reflector that contains the fog lights? I have recently fitted a sports exhaust, and it sent my nearside fog light into melt down!

Any advice would be appreciated.
 
Funnily enough Simon Davidson was talking about this yesterday. I have seen some mails on this somewhere. Certainly one of the register member has done this. If we uncover anything we' ll let you know.

[:D]The 964 rear reflector centre section drops straight in- after you alter your wiring loom to suit.
Three self tappers are all that holds this in place; drill 1/8 holes (3) for these into rear panel.
Get the 964 reflector complete with wiring plugs, as these form a water tight coupling.[&:]
Simon was looking at getting some of these together as a kit? Simon? or go and see a good dis-mantler. Should be on PET CD.[;)]

I recently exchanged em with Macolm MacKay, who undertook a C2 upgrade himself, as mine has had the same conversion but it was completed by a previous owner.

I got shunted just before Christmas and it worked out cheaper to replace the 915 rear with a G50 one. Admittedly Colin Belton did it for me, but I' m sure one can do it for themselves with the right tools.

Hi Richard, I am getting a " relationship" going with specialised paintwork in Reading, I know this is a long way from you but they come well recommended and when i visited them they were working on a diablo, a 2001 GT2, Ferrari 360, and about 10 lotus projects, as well as a 944 and 996.

They are heavily into carbon and fibreglass and have been involved with Lotus cars and exotics for many years, hence the reason I want to work with them to fit my customers GRP kits. My own 965 conversion will be the first project I put to them and should be ready for Porsche in the Park at the end of May.

Costs so far are looking as:
Front, Rear bumpers and Side sills £700+vat
Metallic Paint & fit £725+vat

The paint and fit allows for some extra work I will probably have done and for the fact my car is an unusual metallic colour and will need some very close matching.

I reckon this is reasonable and once we have done the first project we will have a better idea for the next one.

I am also currently working with them on the following that are at quotes stage,
993 GT2 conversion for 87 911, full fenders in GRP rather than just fender extensions (big weight savings), front bumper and chin spoiler and rear adjustable GT2 spoiler, approx £2300+vat fitted.
993 T4 Front GT2 evo wing/splitter and rear adjustable GT2 wing - ongoing and includes interior work as well, costs approx £2000+vat.

I have another project booked with a local firm to me to do a 996 turbo front PU conversion on a Boxster and then update the rest of the body to 2003 spec.

I hope to start sending pics/details out on these once the projects are completed.

I' ve used specialised paintwork before - Kelvin at AFN Reading recommended them and they did a good job on my rear spoiler.

That seems like quite a good price by the way. Will you be changing your wheels to Cups to go the whole C2 upgrade??

I will fit these 18inch wheels, they need spacers but should look the part. I sell them at £995+vat, theres not much margin in them so they are expensive but worth it.

To fit an 87-89 rear reflector to an earlier car, you need to cut out two rectangular pieces from the rear panel to make room for the built-in fog-lights. It' s not a difficult job. See the following link for a view of the cut-outs:

Then simply adapt the loom that went to the existing pre-87 after-thought, external fog-light [&:]

As Steve mentioned above, I' ve since converted my ' 85 to 964 look. The rear-lights have now changed again to 964 style. These need to be fitted as a complete set, as all 3 rear light clusters are angled, unlike the straight up and down look of the 3.2 Carrera lights. Thanks to Simon at Essential-Styling for supplying all the lights [:D]

More hacking of the rear panel has to be done to accommodate a 964 style rear reflector. See the following link for the extra cut-outs, compared to the first view above:

BTW, the rear reflector is already sold [8D]

Anyone considering converting to 964 or 965 should also consider crash protection. I don' t think it' s a good idea to remove the complete aluminium bumpers and associated steelwork and replace only with fibreglass. A real 964/5 has aluminium bumpers underneath the fibreglass, not dissimilar to the 3.2 Carrera bumpers. I' ve heard of some conversion companies mounting a 1" square tube behind the fibreglass bumper. Well it' s not them driving it around is it? It' s you [:mad:]
With a bit of fabrication, I found it easy to convert the original 3.2 lightweight ali' bumpers to fit behind the new fibreglass (you need to make room for the bigger front lights). Details are on my website.

There is weight to be saved though by taking off all the other bumper parts you no longer require - like the steel valance and lip spoiler under the front bumper, rear lower side-fenders etc. These parts can all be sold on [:D]

STOP:

I fitted a late rear reflector with fog lights to my Carrera 3.0. My experience was that the rear panel differs between 915 and later G50 cars which can make this not quite so straight forward if you want to do this on 915 rear panel cars - The rear reflector can sit to high and the lower trim seal may not align.

Only my limted experience, and one that I am sure can be corrected with a little more playing around.

Oh dear, I collect all the parts from Belgium Friday and work starts Saturday, reckon lights will be Mon/Tues will let you know how it goes as I want to have a go myself before I let the bodyshop experts at the lights.

I have sharpened my dremel and I can feel trip to casualty coming on. Regards Si
