Rear seat belts

Hi all,

Does anyone have any experience of fitting rear seat belts to their car? I remember having them in an '89 924s but my current '86 944 Lux doesn't. Where can I buy them? Dare I try it DIY? If it's a bit too tricky can anyone recommend someone they have used for the fitting.

I have the same problem with my 1985 944T, so would be interested in what people have to say on this. Is it legal to carry passengers in the back without seatbelts if they wern't fitted in production?

It is legal if your car wasn't originally fitted with them, although it's obviously not very safe! 1985 was prior to the date for the compulsary fitting of rear belts...my 1985 XR2 doesn't have them either. As some cars did have them fitted (were they an option on early cars?) all the mounting points, etc should be in place, although bolting the buckle to the transmission tunnel can apparently be very fiddly.

Try your local OPC to see if they still stock them, or one of the breakers like PorschApart should have them. Also, there's a company who advertise a belt fitting service in PP, although I've forgotten the name...
 
I know it can be done as I have seen it discussed on other forums. I may be right in thinking that the mounting points are there under the carpet, but don't take my word as gospel as I obvioulsy wasn't paying attention when I read it .

If you have the mounting points in the floor then I have a spare set of belts from my '90 Turbo should anyone want them. I don't think there is anything wrong with them other than they are pointless if there is no back seat [:D] and I will probably want to use the mounting points for a harness.
 
I'm not sure but if you are looking for some they regularly turn up on EBay for around ÂŁ20.00 per set.

I'm sure there must have been ones with 3-point belts. My 1988 924S had factory 3-point belts.

Yes, the later ones had 3 point belts (coupes only). I don't know the year they started for sure but my guess would be in the '87 to '89 period.
 
The mounting points are already there. For parts Id speak to a breaker, theres little demand so inertia belts off a late 944 or a 968 shouldnt be expensive.
 
Actually the mounting points are not necessarily already there; they were added to shells during the production run and I couldn't say if an '86 would have them or not.

To help identify, the mounting points are either side of the seat wells and in the C-pillar (where you'd expect really). A car with belts would have a seat squab and C-pillar trims with holes and you really need to look under them to see if your car has the collars for the bolts to screw into.

Assuming you have the collars you need the inertia reel part (the reel sits in the C-pillar) and the clip and stalk for eaach side. There are black plastic caps to cover the heads of all 4 bolts.
 
To the best of my knowledge, theyre found in all post 1980 bodies. I havent ever seen a 944 (with the trim and the rear seat squab removed) that didnt have all three mounting points on it and Ive seen more than I can remember.

The high rear mounting point will be blanked using a large plastic plug with a cross head and the other two mounts will be found upon removing the rear seat squab. If your car doesnt even have lap belts then youll have to pierce the sponge/vinyl. The easiest way to do it is to remove the rear seat (2x10mm bolts secure the upper and the squab is secured by a number of clips underneat along with quite a lot of glue) and mark the exposed holes with a marker and then press the base against them.

I would buy the parts from a breaker without hesitiation, but only if I could inspect them beforehand: see that you get all of the mountings bolts and trims too.
 
From what i can remember the early cars have the mounts for the basic lap belts but if you want to fit proper 3point belts then the back mounts are missing that holds the inertia part of the belt on. Brackets could be taken off a car and welded on (ive seen this done) but you will also need to change the side boot side trims as well !!
 
Guys thanks for all the comments - when I finally get the car back from the welders (new sills) I'll have a look. Its kind of frustrating having my first Porsche and not only can I not drive it, I can't even see it !
 
For seatbelts i would have a chat with a company called quickfit abs in Middlesex- not Kwickfit (the exhaust people boys to trust etc..) they(quickfit abs ) advertise in the back of the porsche club magazine. They changed the rear seatbelts in our 964 for long ones that would go around child seats,they do all sorts of classic work and fit belts in alot of Porsches,well worth a call when retrofitting seatbelts,they are good, know their job and are not expensive.
