rear seat belts

I have a 1996 3.2 carrera gp white original condition. The wife wont let me take the kids out without rear seat belts being fitted (3 point harnesses). Can anyone help with any suggestions. My main concerns are financial and not damaging the car whilst fitting. I`ve got basic DIY mechanical skills. Thanks for any help

I`ve now bought the belts (3 point static) and intend fitting the rear clamp on top of the parcel shelf (to prevent cutting slits in the parcel shelf). I`ve drilled the holes for the bolts through the parcel shelf but the bolts supplied are not long enough. This is because the speakers lift the parcel shelf approx 50mm. I`m intending getting longer bolts but I`m wondering if the belts will be safe as the strap will only be connected to a bolt that is not tightened fully down. The problem I`ve got is I do not want to have to cut slits in the parcel shelf (if possible) and I have already drilled the holes for the top connections. Can any body help?

I am sure that others can help you out with this as it is a common dilemma. If you don' t get the info you need here, then try Rennlist and Pelican Parts BBS. I know that I have seen threads on just this question.

My recollection is that the seatbelt mounting points are already in your car - you didn' t say it was a cab, correct? If you elect not to go with inertia reel belts it should be very easy to bolt in 3 point belts. Have a look at this page on Pelican Parts as a start:

There are bound to be UK parts suppliers who can help out.

Sorry not to be of more help, but my 1989 has 3 point inertia reel belts already!

There' s a firm in the UK that specialises in seat belts for Porsches . . . they might be able to help . . . . I saw an advert for them in either the Post of Porsche 911 world.

I' ll have a look tonight.

Certainly my 3.2 has rear seat belts already, so it can be done tidily. It would be worth looking at a factory installation to get ideas as to make it neat and tidy. You may even be able to buy the factory parts (not sure how pricey) and retro fit them.

I dont know where you are, but I am sure some local to you with a 3.2 with rear belts would let you nose around as a template.

You are not in Herts by chance? Could see mine then.

The web address for that firm I mentioned is www.quickfitsbs.co.uk it was advertised in Porsche 911 world.

I fitted rear 3-point inertia-reel seatbelts in the back of mine. It was easy because the top mounts (welded in nuts) are already there under the rear speaker panel. Take out the rear panel behind the seats and see if the nuts are already there in yours. You can get the seatbelt kits in Halfords.

I bought two "KLIPPAN Rearsafe" seatbelt kits. They're in light blue boxes. Halfords' part number is 332635. There's also another barcode label on the box (reference number TRC9165-1 B2460. Barcode number 5012249916511). They were on special offer at £3.74 each. Normal price is about £25.

My 6-year old daughter has been quite happy in the back seat for the last two years (we let her out for the occasional trip to the toilet and to feed her though). You get the idea [:D]

I reckon the seats and legroom will be big enough until she's 9'ish. Then she'll just need to be cramped, walk or stay at home [;)]

Lloyd,
My 86 coupe has a child restraint fitted (one), which I don' t use( doesn' t fit me) and if its any good to you, you can have it.
[:D]
I don' t know were or how its fastened (don' t care), but it seems in good nick.
Send me an email if required.

My 89 3.2 has 3 point inertia belts so I imagine they can be retro fitted with parts from a later car, but may need the mountings welding in ?

where abouts do the reels mount ? is there a bolt hole just at the back of the rear quarter window ?

cheers

Johnny,
I put 3 point belts in the back of my 86 Coupe a few years back. The upper mounting point for the inertia reel is under the rear shelf, which is easy to remove if I remember correctly. You'll need to cut the rear shelf to get the belt through, however, you can buy the correct plastic appature inserts from Porsche to make the job look like its a factory fit (I might be able to supply the part numbers if your lucky). As with all these things, installation is a measure twice, cut once job! The lower two mounting points it sounds like you'll know where these are as your lap belts will already use them!
With regards to supply of hardware, Simon Butterworth (Porsch-a-part)supplied mine second hand. I think 964 parts will fit aswell.
If you really want to push the boat out, you could but a replacement rear shelf with the appatures already installed!

Good luck with the project

Regards
Phil
