Rear sound deadening in RS

I know that talking about sounddeadening is close to sacrilage but............

Some time in the past, my car had all the carpet removed and when it was replaced, it wasn't done as well as I would have liked. In particular, the large rear carpet to the engine wall (with Carrera RS on it) doesn't sit well and is a bit lumpy. On checking the parts book, I find that there is a "damping mat" for this area of the RS. It is no longer available.

The carpet is well stuck down so I don't know what is underneith. I am sure there is nothing at the edges or on the flat bit at the back. However, there is somesponge material (not OEM) on the rear shelf to try to make the carpet sit better. In addition, on the vertical element, there is a softer patch in the middle where the carpet seems to sit better.

Without removing the carpet, which I don't want to do until I have a replacement plan, I have no way of knowing what is underneith and therefore what the "softer" area is. I suspect it is the same sponge material I have found elsewhere.

Can anybody tell me what should be there, in as much detail as possible. I suspect that I am missing some sound deadening, which obviously is letting me enjoy the engine noise so much better. However, I would like to make the carpet sit better so any info or ideas would be welcomed.

Simon,
Now I do want one of those sound pads ! There is a very good diagram on the PET catalogue where you can see the various hollows and nooks and crannies and how the foam pad fills them. There is a big hollow above the transmission tunnel on the firewall which just needs a big wedge shape to fill it - think wedge of cheese ! (which is I suspect how mine and, by the sounds of it, yours was done). I'm not happy with how mine looks but short of cutting up lots of tiny pieces of foam to fill the gaps I can't see a sensible solution if the RS part is NLA.

I have the PET catalogue in front of me! I am looking at illustration 807-15 and it shows the available parts, or as it turns out, the unavailable parts!

My version of PET shows the part in question, 12, but that doesn't have a hollow above the transmision tunnel! The OPC parts guy suspected that what is shown is the standard coupe/targa part, which actually comes in 2 parts. However, the RS part is listed as a single piece. I am trying to find out what the RS one would be like. In addition, the catalogue lists other soundproofing/damping parts. Which should an RS have?
