Rear suspension question

I have need to replace my rear shock absorbers, and the Bentley book says to remove the lower shock bolt with the car' s weight on it' s wheels. I assume that this is to compress the shock absorber, but, as I can' t get under the car with it resting on it' s wheels, does this mean a ramp/lift (neither of which I have) , or is there another way ?
Or is one meant to lie on the floor and reach underneath (assuming I can reach)?

It seems a simple operation (bolt bottom, nut top) that I thought that I would do it myself, but.....

I needed to do this when I replaced my CV joint - just jack up the suspension arm to remove the load on the bolt. If I remember rightly it' s a 22mm socket you want.

Just to add some more details as the above may not make sense - I lifted the car, removed the wheels and put it on stands - then used a trolley jack to lift the arm. When you do the CV it says keep it at ' normal ride height' I did it at ' normal jacking height' without problems

Ta, I think I know what you mean, as I have the Bentley book picture infront of me as I read your email.

Now I have got to get over the approx. £112.00 price for each adjustable Koni (which are what are fitted at the moment all round, and only the rears seem to have gone to sleep !) This is based on the fact that I can' t push the front wing down at all, and the rear just seems to be a bit too easy to push - hard road setting on the Koni' s, and I still have all my fillings.

John,
Remember Koni' s are fully repairable!!![;)]
Only brand that is...
You don' t have any ramps?
another trick is to raise the arse, under the crankshaft, put a couple of bricks under each rear wheel and lower the tub back down[&:].... raises the axles... takes tension off the shocks- compresses them, and gives you alittle room under..
should be a link on the web for the konis.

I didn' t know they were repairable, and the company that I contacted to get new ones didn' t tell me - I wonder why ?

So, tomorrow, I will ' phone up the Koni main dealers (in Camberley, I think), and ask them.

Yes, no ramp - too idle to do much of my own maintenance, but this seemed so easy, and saves me £45.00/hour labour.
