Rear Trailing Arm Help please !

Hi All,

Need some advice "" I have only had my '99 Boxster for a week and have been told by Porsche that the rear trailing arms need replacing as they are very noisy !

Can my usual mechanic do the job or do I need to find myself a Porsche Specialist garage ?

If this is the case, can anyone recommend a specialist in the St Helens area, including Warrington, Wigan or maybe I need to go as far afield as Manchester or Liverpool.

I guess most people will tell you only an OPC or Porsche independant needs to do this, however any garage that you have confidence in could change the arms over - at least you could take it to them and let them have a look to size up the job, if they tell you yes then perhaps the cheapest option is to get the parts yourself from Porsche-a-Part (you will find them on the internet).

Ninemeister is a good independant in Warrington 01925 242342 or I would use Chris Sanderson at Loe Bank Motors in Ramsbottom 01706826060 if he's not to far. PS-He's only half a mile from Porsch-a-part so you could get your clear headlights as well!
 
As Glyn states any competent engineer should be able to fit them.

If you are still taking a car of that vintage to an OPC you have too much money (well not for long [;)]).
 
I pinched this from another forum I do hope the original poster does'nt mind too much. I think it sums things up well enough.

it's cake, but i HIGHLY reccommend purchasing a ball joint press (NOT a pickle fork). you can find them on ebay for around $25. without it, you run a high risk of tearing the ball joint boot (which may be why yours failed again so quickly).

basically, you undo the upper control arm bolt from the center of the lower control arm. then, loosen the bolt that fastens the lower arm to the suspension cradle. press out the ball joint. remove the lower control arm bolt. reverse to install.

when installing, the ball joint will want to turn in the steering knuckle. you can use a torx to hold it, but this is a pain. since the ball joint pin is tapered, if you tap the ball joint into the steering knuckle with a hammer, it will stop turning so you can tighten it.

also, if you're replacing a rear, mark the location of the eccentric bolt before you loosen the lower control arm, otherwise you'll need to have your camber adjusted by an alignment shop. fronts are easer since the drive shaft's not in the way. you CAN replace the control arm WITHOUT removing the drive shaft.

the fronts take about 30 min. rears, 45min - 1hr.[FONT=verdana,geneva"]

If the new parts throw out the rear suspension the car will handle like a real pig and scrub rear tyres. Most tyre centres can't even check the tracking on a Porsche.



 
The work could be done by any competent garage, I would get Chris Franklin of centegravity to then do a laser alignment of all four wheels.
Give Phil Clark at TPC300 a ring (he is in Hindley near Wigan).

As I stated any decent tyre fitter will have the equipment to alignment both front and rear suspension on any car. I doubt that most independent's have the kit and neither do the OPC's.

They'll drive or trailer your car to the nearest equipped fitter and get them to do the job. You'll then have the alignment charge from the tyre fitter plus a mark-up.

I don't know if my location is the exception to the rule but Protyre in Gloucester and Bristol are but two tyre depots with the full alignment kit. The last time I was at either of the Lovett OPC's in Swindon and Bristol neither had the alignment rig nor does my local independent. [8D]
 
Well your lucky with your tyre centre's we have Qwik-fit[:eek:].

I was trying to advise Karen to go and have the work done at a choice of good a specialist close to her location, both have the necessary equipment for checking the alignment.
She has only had the car for a week and will need to know who she can trust to work on the car, now and in the future.
