Rear view cam and Apple car play retrofit 981s PCM 3.1

Hello everyone

I hope you’re all well.

I have a 2013 981s with PCM 3.1 with aux input and bluetooth.

I was originally only looking for a reversing camera, but then I spoke to an installer who recommended the Apple CarPlay retrofit at the same time, as the Apple CarPlay kit allows for a reversing camera input.

From what I understand both of these options work via an add on units/device.

I wanted some advice on the best system in terms of reliability and that oem look for the camera when it comes on i.e the reversing lines etc.

I’ve had a look at various posts and then also came across the PCCM+ system available from Porsche, but can’t find much info on this or whether it’s worth it.

I made contact with an installer who was recommended on one of the posts here, I’ve asked which system/make of the retrofit equipment they’re quoting for - awaiting a response. Then I realised I need advice from people who own/have experience with these cars and also have no financial interest in which ever system I go for.

What I want to avoid is having a system installed and then coming across a more desirable system or additions I could have had done at the same time later on.

If anyone has any experience or advice on this it would be very much appreciated.

Thank you

Hi,

I have a 2015 Cayman 981 with PCM 3.1. I did some research when I purchased the car a couple of years ago and ended up selecting TTW Installations in Nottingham to have Apple CarPlay and the reversing camera fitted. I took the car to them and they did the complete install in about 2.5 to 3 hours. The installation is completely invisible and all the existing PCM functions work correctly. CarPlay is wireless and automatically connects every time I get in the car. I've had no issues since fitting and am exceedingly happy with the end result. I confirm that I have no links to the company - I'm just a very happy customer - and I would certainly recommend them.

Here's a link - they have actually included pictures of the installation in my car on this page (the blue Cayman) - I think mine may have been the first 981 they'd done.

Cheers,

Thanks everyone

Do you know which brand of system you had installed? I’ve read about mr12volt, joyetech etc, I’ve read a few things about connectivity issues and little gremlins with some systems so just trying to weight it up before committing.

I don't know the brand of the system fitted to my car - there may be something on the website?

Tim

My system is a IDCore IDC-PCM31C. I've had no gremlins, its wireless and can listen to the radio when using the CarPlay interface.
