Rear window replacement

Today the rear plastic window on my 4 year old Boxster decided to split in the cold weather. [:(] Any ideas where I can get a new one from and at what price? Please don't tell me that the whole roof needs replacing!!!

Possibly. Mine did (coincidentally after 4yrs as well) allthough it is possible to have the window replaced - If you search here and on Boxanet there are numerous threads on the subject with some address and telephone numbers

Rear window thread

Snap! Mine went a few weeks ago - I eventually got it replaced by Tower Porsche in London for 350 all in. The OPC wanted 3,600 for a new roof as they don't "do" a replacement rear window. Both Tower and the OPC were actually surprised by the fact that mine had lasted for 4 years. I found the "oh it's only a matter of time..." attitude on a 4 grand componant a disgrace.

Mines just starting to go cloudy at the edges along the fold line and is sporting scratches and a nice crease from not "chopping one" day. The car is almost 5 years now and it has to be said the hood looks pretty knackered!

JCB..

Thanks for the responses.

Phew - although I could have done without the expense, £250 for a window replacement is not as bad as I first feared. I suppose my other option would be to see if my insurance company would pay for the whole roof to be replaced at an OPC. My excess would be less than the cost of a new window, and maybe I would benefit from a whole new roof. Anyone else tried this with their insurance company?

Also, if the whole roof was being replaced, would they be able to fit the '03 glass version, and if not, were there any improvements in the '01 or '02 roofs with plastic windows which I could benefit from?

To fit a glass window hood you would also need the frame and fittings which is likely to be v.expensive.

Later, plastic window, hoods had a liner.

Thanks JCB - I suppose I 'd have a bit of a job getting an OPC to fit an '03 hood with all the trimmings to my '00 boxster and get the insurance company to foot the bill! [&o]

Do you know if the plastic window lined roofs were that much better than the original?

same with mine. the window was quite cloudy halfords do a cream.
lots of hard work but it dose inprove the window. also there is a web site
that i have looked at www.soft-tops.co.uk

Ask your OPC to fit an 03 hood onto an 03 car and get your insurance co to foot the bill - let us know how you get on!!

My insurance footed the bill - I assumed that the window had been attacked by some scrotes and the insurance company never quibbled

Hi Cary - did they foot the bill just to replace the window or was this for a whole new roof? If it was the roof, did you get a newer version?

Well, I seem to have finally sorted things out after a few phone calls today. My local Porsche centre (Cardiff) offered to get a new window stitched in for £385 all in. Rang my insurance company who said that if I forward them the invoice, they will reimburse me. Only cost to me is a £60 excess under the replacement windscreen part of my policy. Not even counted as a claim on my record - PHEW!

Worst thing about it all, is having to drive around for a week with a big lump of sticky tape across my back window until Porsche centre can fit me in next week. Oh the shame... [:)]

Go for it - my OPC (East London) washed their hands of it. New roof (4 grand - ker ching!) or fend for your self. Is the OPC Cardiff job underwritten by the OPC - ie warranty? If so, my OPC denying any such window only service existed is telling porkies.

Hmm, good question, Dapster. When I spoke to the service dept, I asked if the window is replaceable or if its a case of a whole new hood. They could have fed me a load of bull and tried to rip me off, but the guy was very helpful and said that there was absolutely no need foa whole new hood as they get a specialist in to restitch a window to the existing hood. I assumed that because the OPC were arranging the job and invoicing me that it would be covered by a warranty of somesorts. Might be worth me checking it out though.

I'd imagine that it comes down to how much your local OPC can be bothered to help!

OPC East London is too busy selling Cayennes with 20" chrome wheels to Arsenal footballers and East End gangsters wives to bother with the faint cries of anguish coming from a 4 year old Boxster owner. They don't even seem that interested in selling me a new 987 but that's another story.

I was interested to note this morning as I followed a Bently Azure along the A4 that it too had a plastic rear window. Now, if I was spending £230,000 on a car, the least I'd expect is a bit of glass thrown in!

A plastic window on a quarter of a million quid Bentley -that's a shocker! And there was me whinging last night about Porsche putting plastic windows on £30K cars. Still - I bet the Bentley driver didn't have half a roll of duck tape holding his window together!
