Rear Window Seal

As the weather was rather nice this morning, in relative terms anyway, I decided to go for a little run in the 993........headed west to Gareloch and Loch Long, all went well!

On returning I washed the car and noticed something strange about the rear external window seal. It appears to "tuck" under itself on the top edge creating a moisture trap. There was condensation on the inside of the rear screen this morning, which was frozen and the internal rubber is also loose.

I have attached a pic and would be very grateful if anyone could confirm if its the same as they have!

I take it that is the top corner? Suspect I can't see into that corner in same way due to the "third brake light", but it's dark now, will take a look in the morning (and if weather as predicted might head out for similar drive - wanted to do today but had promised someone I'd do something boring[8|])
 
Yes, it's the top near side corner, it's the same across the length of the top. Have attached another pic - it looks like the seal isn't up far enough.

Really enjoyed the drive today, cut across the military road and followed a loch Long up to Arrochar and had a nice cooked brekky at the pit stop!
 

Looks like the rear screen has been out (probably to repair the infamous rust at the base of the screen) and put back in a bit too low. This results in the rubber sitting too low and a tendancy to curl under itself as it hasn't got enough bodwork to sit against. It can be eased back into it's correct position using a thin piece of plastic (a credit card's too thick - it need to be quite flexible bit at the same time stiff enough to be able to be run round between the rubber and the body) but it'll just slip back under again, as Humphry Bogart said "maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow but soon ..."

You have three options that I am aware of. You can get the screen taken out and re-positioned correctly but that's very hit and miss in my experience and you run the risk of the screen breaking , you could peel the rubber back and put something in to stop the rubber edge curling under; either a thin piece of rubber tube or mastic would do the job or you learn to live with the un-slightly blemish.

I suppose a fourth option is to go everywhere really slowly as I have found that it's speed related or more correctly air pressure related.

The rubber you see is cosmetic only and does not stop water getting into the car. The rear screen is bonded to an inner rubber that mounted on the lip of the window opening. The condensation is probably just due to low overnight temperatures.

 
Thanks Clyde, unfortunately the screen will have to come out at some point in the future as the dreaded rust bubble has appeared in one tiny spot! Same with front screen unfortunately........

The inner rubber seal has come dislodged as well, which makes sense if the screen has slipped.

It's usually not so much slipped as not positioned correctly when being re-fitted. The inner rubber/screen shouldn't be able to move once the screen is bonded in position, so the rubber possibly wasn't fitted to the aperture correctly prior to bonding the glass in?

If the screen is going to have to come out anyway then I would just live with it until that's done. Make sure you get a fitter that knows what he's doing if you can but that's easier said than done, both of mine have been in and out more times than I can remember and I've never had either re-fitted square and with the right gap to all four edges yet.

When the screen is out ensure that any damage to the paintwork (either by the last lot that took it out or the guy you get this time) is cleaned up and painted to prevent it rusting again. The problem is that the fitters just hack at the rubber/bonding agent with a very sharp knife and don't give a monkeys about damaging the paintwork because once the screens back in you can't see it.

 
Who would you recommend for carrying out the removal and remediation work to both screens?

It's not inament and you have to look hard to see the first signs but maybe mid year or early next depending on what else crops up.....central Scotland based would be nice!
 

Sadly I can't recommend any as most, if not all, bodyshops farm this work out to mobile fitters that just send any guy out. I would (and do) put my car into Eastern Western in Broxburn. They do at least give a bit of assurance that the screen will be removed carefully and will repair any bodywork that has been damaged prior to the screen going back in. But that does not mean that the screen will not be squint or too high or low unfortunately. If you're going to the spring clean speak to Peter the GM about it. Or pop in to see him, he will give you a good price for the repair.

Thanks Clyde..........what is the 'spring clean'?

Will shop around a bit. I used an excellent body shop in Rurherglen (name escapes me at the moment) who did some paint for me on the M635CSi and 944, as well as my fathers Aston, great job but very expensive! I'm sure he used to do paint for OPC......
 
I had GLASSMAN (over on PH) to come and sort my front and rear screen because they were doing the same. Ending up with a new screen to the front (badly previously fitted). The rear screen he fitted a slightly wider rubber strip too.
He does alot of 993s and it has worked just fine ...... not peeling back since
