Rear Wiper Change - an idiot asks

Right then.

Whilst pretending to have a modicum of mechanical knowledge seems to have got me through most things quite well I am completely baffled by the rear wiper on the 944.

I have a Bosch 22" long wiper blade with their Quick Clip System. The wiper on the back attaches to the arm with a pin which seems to be fixed to the ropey looking wiper. Do I assume correctly that all I can do is change the rubber and not the whole lot? I feel like a tit asking this. All help appreciated.

Thanks,
Justin.

You can do either. I usually tend to replace the whole thing as it's easier and it's not a huge amount of money at the end of the day. Howver you can just buy the rubber squeegy bit, usually at a longer length that you can cut to length but it's just easier and quicker to buy the whole blade. I will probably get chastised for saying this but for things like this I find Halfords is fine - competitive on price and convenient.

IIRC there is a small tab at the pivot point that needs to be lifted to release the whole wiper then as Haynes says reassembly is a reversal of the above.

i actually replaced mine last weekend. got a full arm replacement from halfords. they have a booklet that tells you which model to buy and they stock genuine bosch ones. i found it easier to remove the whole thing from the glass to get the old one off but only took a few minutes to do the whole thing.

Please please please replace with a 24" item. You'd be astounded how much more area this clears, and it looks perfect for the rear hatch. Makes it a use-able rear wiper as opposed to looking in the mirror whilst it's raining thinking "well I guess that's pretty good ....... if the car is left-hand-drive"

See HERE for a pretty crap photo.

You can certainly change the wiper "end" ~ not just the rubber itself. If the arm needs changed, it's a simple bolt-on job.

There are 2 type of rear wiper arm.

My 944S (1987, rubber boot spoiler) uses a wiper that is mounted on a pin. The wiper arm will also angle up to 90 degrees away from the rear screen.
My 944T (1990, bridge rear spoiler) uses a wiper with a standard click mount in to the 'J' on the end of the arm (like windscreen wipers). This will only lift about 15 degrees away from the rear screen.

i agree - i swapped mine for 24" and it is much better - i just got mine (rubber and blade) from Halfords.

Of course you could just take the motor, wiper, and wiring off completely making the rear window look ten times better! Sell the bits on ebay, and buy some fluffy dice and a discreet rubber bung to plug the hole![:D]

Yes and watch as the new lighter tailgate leaps into the air every time you push the button. I would add rain X or similar to the shopping list though.

Thanks for your replies guys.

Looks like I'll be removing the wiper and gubbins this weekend then. (Must resist temptation to turn the 944 into a tracker...I must...)
