how much should I budget for ?

It's one of those "how long's a piece of string" questions. Web sites like J Z Machtech (just over £4500) will give you a basic price but much depends of what you choose to repair/upgrade etc. whilst the engine is apart. The JZM price is for a top end only but, again, while it's apart it may be beneficial, depending on the state, to do more.

I've heard of people spending £3500 - and I've heard of people spending £10000 or more.

Much may depend on your reasoning for getting a rebuild anyway. What problems are you hoping to fix??

It seems to be a common feeling that oil leaks are difficult to use as a justifiable reason for a rebuild. Time and again the subject comes up - particularly over on Rennlist - and the same opinions surface. Without doubt a rebuild will probably solve the problem but it just seems to be a "sledgehammer to crack a nut" solution. If you were talking poor leakdown numbers along with the oil leaks it would be another story but it seems it's a fairly big investment to solve a relatively small problem.

I guess it just depends how much money you feel happy throwing at the problem.

If your down South try Northways nr Reading (01189714333 Ray or Paul) they start at around £3000+vat for the basic rebuild.

Regarding the Oil dripping, if you are using less than a pint of oil/1000miles and havent a blue smoke problem or poor leakdown measures, I would leave well alone as you can buy a lot of oil for £3,525+

I too have oil dripping but have not really investigated the sources in too much detail. The car is going really really well. (114,500 miles up!)
I would only rebuild the engine (or should I say pay to have the engine rebuilt) if there was another firm indication. Besides I've noticed there are less oil drips if I use the car more (I guess it is just burning off the hot engine instead of finding a route to the floor) and that's as good an excuse as any to take the 964 whenever I can!

As they say. You pays your money and takes your choice! (or Take your choice and pay your money in this case)

The "less drops of oil" from using the car more regularily is actually a well known fact/side benefit you get from actually using one as a daily driver. The cars perform better, behave themselves, niggly problems (especially electrical) disappear etc.

Mine has never leaked on the floor, but is sometimes moist........err.

However after the yearly trip to Le Mans it dries up and stays that wat for another couple of months or so, they really need to be used properly, then they are less of an issue.
