I've recently bought a Porsche Boxter S, 17k miles, 04 plate which I'm delighted with however I've noticed a 986 & 987 model? What's the difference between the two other than one's newer?

Cheers in advance!

987 is the newer and current model, It was a facelift design, including major changes to interior, exterior, engine, suspension etc (it became available is 2005). Porsche stated that the 987 shares only 20% of its components with 986

Having said that they look the same to most people [:D]. The most obvious external styling change was the headlights, the intake vents on the sides (987 are larger, with more pronounced horizontal slats and are coloured metallic silver, irrespective of the paint colour on the rest of the car). The wheel arches where enlarged to allow wheels up to 19 inches in diameter. 987 has read glass window and the lid can be lowered when moving (sub 30 mph)

Interior wise the 987 has a more prominent circular theme in the instrument cluster and cooling vents.

Have a look here http://www.skampsweb.net/pages/cars/ours/boxcoll/boxcoll.php
Top three are 986's, the bottom one is a 987 (must remember to add pics of the new car)

NEARLY Everything [;)][:D][8D] Starting with every single panel, roof and glass areas. Interior completely new including the materials used and the chairs. Engine beefed up and reworked resulting in better performance, better mpg, better distance between services, and better sound track from new induction set up.

986's are great cars and 987's are even greater IMO

Nah! [8D]

A 987 2.7 (2007 model year) has virtually the same power as the original 986 Boxster S (245/252 BHP)

A new Boxster 2.7 is also slightly cheaper than the original price of the 986- so obviously Porsches are getting cheaper !

Ignoring all the shape and parts differances [:D] look at the VIN digits 7 + 8 + 12 Found by peering in windscreen on top of dash at passenger side (or in the vehicle book)
