recently exiled to the NE

A Clift

New member
Greetings. I'm just in the process of moving to the NE after several years in the colonies (Scotland, NI and recently Wales). Hope to meet up with you sometime, but first query is where should I get my Boxster serviced (renting near Yarm for the time being)? Any recommendations (or warnings) welcome. PM if necessary. RLR are very close to my office.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Andy

Andy welcome to the North East. Yarm is a great spot [;)], i'll be in the Black Bull myself this weekend having a few sherbets with the lads...

Redline Racing are highly recommended [;)] very knowledgable, professional and a wee bit lighter on the wallet than your friendly OPC.

There's also John at Sports & Specialist Cars of Malton, a little bit further to travel but the roads on the way there are superb [:D] and i'm sure John will make you welcome with a cuppa while you browse through his superb selection of Pork and other exotica.

Drive safely.

Hi Andy
I have been using RLR for the last twelve twelve years or so (I live about five minutes away from them), and have always been satisfied with the work they've done. During that time they have looked after two 911 turbo's and currently a Boxster S for me. I have no hesitation in recommending them. Great set of lads (Simon, Darren, David, Alex, & Adam), very keen, friendly and obliging, and know the marque well. As you may know, as well as servicing road cars, they prepare customer cars for racing in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB and other championships, and have a very good record in so doing. Great drivers in recent years such as Richard Westbrook, Jonathan Cocker, James Sutton, Danny Watts, Tim Harvey, etc, have all achieved high levels of success driving cars prepared by the RLR team. For the last three years or so they have also been preparing customer cars for racing in the Porsche Supercup in Europe and further afield.
The downside to the racing connection is that they never work on a weekend at the RLR garage, as during the 'season' they are invariably away at a race track acting as 'pit crew' for the drivers, and this can often mean that a couple of them might be away a day or two before the race weekend as well. This is not a problem, as long as you can give them as much notice as possible to sort out a mutually convenient time for your work.
Having said all that, there have been good reports over the last few months on this Forum about work undertaken by Jamie Nelson who I think is Stockton-based, and I understand he is reasonably priced as well. Last time I asked at RLR, I was told their labour rate was £60/hour. Not sure how this compares with Jamie Nelson.
Hope the above helps

Hi Andy (again)
I'm now acutely embarrassed after seeing the 'cableguy' response above, because although RLR suits me down to the ground for many reasons, I forgot to mention John Hawkins at Specialist Cars of Malton, who has a mega well-deserved reputation in this area. The man's hospitality is legendary, his support to the PCGB is massive, the cars he sells are the very best (my brilliant second turbo was from him), and his servicing facility I understand to be excellent as well. In short, we're pretty well fixed in this area for good servicing, without ever going near an OPC
Regards
Alan

I would echo Alan B's thoughts on RLR!! Very friendly, helpful and always take the time to explain the work etc. And definitely cheaper than OPC! They even left my car once at Car Spa (next door) for me to collect as I couldn't get back before they closed to set off for a weekend's racing - and I hadn't paid for the service!! Mind I obviously did very quickly thereafter.......

I believe they now also have the IT equipment to resolve the Service Overdue warning .........

Thank you all very much indeed for the advice. Since RLR are a 5 minute walk from my office, it looks as though they're a good bet - but I'm certainly looking forward to some of the driving whether to Malton or elsewhere. Bringing the car up next week - good bye North Wales. Also looking forward to trying out Croft sometime. Best wishes,

Perhaps a little further north than you'd prefer but I highly recommend DBM (Darren Brown Motors - Specialist Cars) of Ryton, Tyne & Wear. Darren has looked after all of my cars for the last 25 years. Superb, friendly service and sensible prices charged. (0191 413 4444 - ask for Darren or Andy.)
