Recommended Engine Oil

Needing to top up with engine oil. I imagine too it's an often talked about subject. Engine currently has 130k miles on it and the Porsche recommendations vary across 5W-30 to 15W-50.. Going fully synthetic, I've been suggested Mobil 1 5W-30. However, with an older high mileage engine I'm thinking a 5W-40 at least (although not available as Mobil 1). Any fully synthetic make and SAE suggestions?

Cheers

Marcus,

As per our 'phone call, the oil of choice for most of the Indies seems to be a semi-synth of 10W-40. There are many rumours going around about the lack of suitable additives in the current blend of Mobil 1 which are not best suited to the older 964 engines. Castrol or Texaco seem favoured brands but full ester synthetic Silkolene Pro-S is favoured by many (didn't mention that on the 'phone!!).

I enjoyed the chat - hopefully you found it useful!! All those things to watch and listen for now!!!

Regards

Dave

I have used on recommendation from others Fusch Super Syn 5w/40 fully synthetic Fusch work in alliance with Sylkolene. Recomendation from ollie.

I use the same as Grandad..... and the air cooled Porsche specialist I use recommends the same. Don't get too worried about topping up with identical oil as it will be diluted by the other 10.5 litres or so that is already in there.

That is unless you have an oil leak or two. In which case switch to 10w/40 semi. I havent really looked into the 10w/40 oils that much. I did try running mine on 10w/40 Millers oil but the car felt a bit sluggish to me especially when cold so I switched to the Fuch Titan Super Syn 5W/40. Car runs really well on the Fusch oil.

When I first got mine I was advised to use Mobil 1 15W50 Motorsport Formula, by JMG Bournemouth.

I've done about 5000 miles on it and it seems OK

My engine was fully rebuilt 15,000 miles ago, before I bought it, so I hope it was the right advice!

I don't recall seeing it mentioned on oil threads from memory and I'm now wondering why!

Does anyone else use it?

I use Mobil 1-0/40 from Costco-£19.95 + VAT & Mobil 1-Diesel in the BMW,same price.John at Unit 11 says it's too thin-I ignore him after all the car does quite a lot of local shopping runs with my wife who uses it day to day,so the "0" aids the frequent starting scenrio. In my opinion, the important figure is the "40" for the longer runs.

Found this from Bentley publishers.

Seems a fair selection from this and a suggestion of alternatives from the Forum. I guess the main point might be what NOT to use (those recommended only for later engine types)..
