Recommended oil grade?

What is the general consensus on the ideal oil grade for a varioram 993 engine?

The drivers manual states

Winter and summer below -20C (doesn't really apply in the UK) : 5W-30, 5W-40 and 5W-50

Winter and summer above -20C : 10W-30, 10W-40 and 10W-50
Summer only : 15W-40, 15W-50, 20W-40 and 20W-50

Thanks for pointing me in the direction of that. I have just read it over a couple of times. There were a couple of interesting quotes in it

"I can confirm that Porsche are currently only approving 0W- and 5W- oils for general use. Where approved oils are not easily available Porsche currently allow the use of full or part-synthetic products meeting the ACEA A3 specification and having a viscosity of 0W-40, 5W-40 or 5W-50. Previously approved oils are also acceptable except for the 996 derivatives."

and

"So my advice is to stick with a major manufacturer full synthetic 0W-40, 5W-40, or 5W-50 .... and for the manual transmission, synthetic too !"

I am not sure I agree with this. The suggestion is that 0W and 5W are the correct W viscosities but I think that is too thin. It certainly does not agree with the recomendations written by Porsche in 1996 contained in the Drivers Manual that comes with the car. I can understand a change when the 996 engine came in as this is a brand new design but the 993 is based on the 964 engine so why a change to 0W or 5W now.

Has there ever been an official update specifically for the 993 from Porsche recommending a change to 0W or 5W? I am happy to be educated on this.

04 factory bulletin for ALL models '78 to '98 (pre 996). Oils which are not 0W or 5W are NOT approved by Porsche for this year range

Wow. That implies 0W or 5W in 993, 964, 3.2, SC ... back to 1978. That goes against the advice of any Porsche specialist I have ever talked to.

Thanks Maurice that list is interesting.

What it doesn't tell you is when to choose 0W or 5W. I even notice Mobil is approved for 0W-40, 5W-40 and 10W-40 (the only 10W-40) in the list.

I am still unsure what is the best viscosity to put in a 993 in the UK climate.

Ian, when I went through the same process you are now going through a few years ago, the explanation I received for still putting semi synthetic in older cars is that, given it is thicker, there is a reduced likelihood of oil leaks.

Hi Ian

Actually the full article goes in depth into suitability of grades by ambient temperature range - only the page with the chart got published....

cheers, Maurice [8|]
Do you have a source for that ... I would be very interested to see it.

Ian.
