I am new to the forum. Apologies if this is covered elsewhere - I cant seem to find out. I have a 944S2 cabrio and my wife drives a Cayenne S. We are looking for a reliable Porsche specialists nearby for servicing and maintenance. Any advice appreciated

Jaz have moved to St Albans. JZ haven't dealt with 944's for a number of years. RPM are slightly further but know 944s.

There are a couple of specialists nearer london who don't necessarily specialise in 944s but I don't recall their names. Will come back when I do recall their names.

If you can't find anyone in North London, you might want to consider Tower Porsche on Druid Street near Tower Bridge or RGA who are located at Vauxhall. I've used both and have been very happy so far.

I'll second the recommendation for Jon at Tower Porsche, although they are not known for keeping to timescales!

Good work though and reasonably priced too.

Oli.

Chelsea Carrera in High Wycombe but they used to be in, well, Chelsea, and I believe they collect.
As said, JZ Machtec don't work on them and more, and from my experience RPM aren't interested either: I got the impression the 944 was serviced by the apprentice and not checked by anyone, and their rates are too high for that.

Heading further out, Auto 2000 in Bedford, Promax in Brackley, Ninex in Maidenhead or Hillcrest in Henley.

Tony Ruggles at Carrera Engineering in Nazeing 01992892333. 11/2miles from main line (Broxbourne) to Liverpool Street Stn. (30mins).
Has a web site and has owned a 944 Turbo as well in the past.[:)] Used with him for years.

Just to add to this my thoughts about serviing the older cars that aren't worth six figure sums.

From speaking to the indies there is a trend for them to move towards the newer models: not a surprise as it's easy to win business from people just out of the Porsche Centre network and used to large bills. It's a common situation that an owner of a 944 goes in with a list of niggling faults. The specialist does the donkey work of diagnosing what's wrong, presents a list of work needed, and the owner can't afford all that so takes the car away. You can see it in their eyes as they pick up the long list and start to add it all up, knowing full well you aren't going to be happy, and they've wasted their time. It's a look of genuine surprise I get when I say "that's fine, go ahead".

Speaking to 944 owners, though, it's a common thing for them to feel they are at the bottom of the indie's list as they're increasingly interested in newer or rarer cars. Mine used to be serviced by the 944-trained business owner, but as they expanded it was the junior staff let loose on it and it really suffered. You might not expect PC-levels of service, but it'd still be nice if the car was test-driven, and didn't have silly things like the S2 air filter being left for many years as "you didn't ask us to change it".

I think I'd take a view that a specialist is essential for some work that's 944-specific, but a lot of general servicing might actually be better done by a good local mechanic if you have one. I'm lucky that there's a selection of specialists around me who aren't ridiculously more expensive than other "general" garages, so it makes sense to use them. I'd say that a lot of Porsche indies now have no interest in 944s, for sound business reasons, so would be better off not taking them in as JZ decided to do.
