Red rear lights

I've seen a few 944's with red rear lights and really like them, especially on a black car. Can you buy these as units and if so where? Or can you spray them and get them through the MOT?

Not just red - I have seen black ones as well.

I thought they were done with a can of spray paint, probably from Hellfrauds.

I have tinted lights all round on both of my 944s. There's two types: Spray painted, as mentioned above, or self-adhesive film, similar to window tinting.

I think the all-red clusters are different though, and are a third-party manufactured accessory.

You can usually find all three on eBay pretty often.

Gawd I feel really old and out of it today [8|]

I moan in one thread about trying to increase the light from dazzly front lights and now I'm going to moan in another thread about trying to obscure the rear lights so it's harder to see you indicating. It's a good job we are all different or we'd have nothing to post about [:D]

I just think the rear lights date the 944 so much! When I went to see the car it had black tinted rear lights from Germany on - but they looked a bit chavalicious in my opinion so I had the seller replace them with the original units. Here's a pic with red rears...

Rear lights are one of my favourite parts of the car! I like the lego-block similicity of them. Think Mk2 Passat, Mk1 Golf, E30 BMW etc etc etc ...

Far too good to obscure.

The black ones are also made by a third party along with the red - German I think. If I did change the rears it would be for some with transparent indicator and maybe lower half of the fog lamp lenses but dont think the guy who made them does them anymore.

Was in contact with the clear-indicator guy last week! He doesn't make them anymore due to thye scarcity of good original units. But he does sell the clear indicator lens and provide fitting instructions (about £50 I think). Looks like quite a difficult job and I think I prefer the reds?

Agreed. Those all-red lights look horrid in my opinion, but each to their own.

Heh "¦ I know exactly where you're coming from, but can I attempt to reassure you a little? The tinting (when responsibly done) is only heavy enough to affect how the clusters look when not illuminated. Using higher powered bulbs than standard completely negates any ill effects"”in fact, I'll wager my rear lights, indicators, etc are a little brighter than standard overall.

It does negatively affect the rear reflectors though. An MOT tester feeling particularly picky could fail you for it.

Well I sort of feel a bit ashamed to admit this but I think the best looking 944 would be one with a 968 rear end and 968 side sills but a 944 S2/turbo front end. I really like the 968 rear, it is the best part of the car. I also think the rubber spoiler would set it off just nicely. When I was rear ended about a year or so ago I did seriously consider having a 968 rear panel fitted but decided against it because I couldn't be fussed with all the 968 side sills and other things i'd need to set it of like door handles and teardrop mirrors.

Sorry to admit this, I realise in some poeples eye's i've just committed a blasphemy!

I did take a good long look at the rear end of a new model Range Rover the other day in a traffic jam as the shape and dimensions of their rear light cluster did look very close to a 944 rear light cluster. They are the rectangular units with two cirlular lamp units. It might look a bit Ferarri-ish but would have looked pretty modern. I think the chances of the unit fitting is pretty remote though.

Oooh dear no! That french Lux with a 968 rear end looks all wrong. For a bunch of reasons I can't put my finger on.

I agree that he 968 shape is a more modern one (whole car, that is), but the rear lights are not to my taste, even on a complete 968. (And I always preferred the 944 to the 968).

It looks sort of boss-eyed.

Must say am also not a fan of the 968 styling anyway, always looks to me simply like a 944 with a dodgy aftermarket body kit on it - the front and back lights especially.

The 944 is beautiful as it is, i like it the way Porsche designed it,a future classic car,if they are all butchered up it cheapens the 944 series and makes it look like one of those duff looking modified Vauhall Calibras[:'(]Exhausts and wheels i can go to but spraying the rear lights[:'(]My black turbo has cup mirrors and i feel guilty every time i look at them[:D]
