I received an e-mail from HQ thanking me for my booking for this years festival and enquiring if I would like to exhibit on the Register display........assuming that my car was red, white or blue.
My reply was as follows:-
[FONT=courier new"]Dear Louisa Harvey,
[FONT=courier new"]
[FONT=courier new"]Thank you for your e-mail.
[FONT=courier new"]
[FONT=courier new"]To be quite honest, as the owner of a black car, I am a little insulted by the selection of only red/white/blue cars for the Register displays.
[FONT=courier new"]
[FONT=courier new"]I am a regular supporter of PCGB events, have had my car in various Register/Regional displays over the years and am a 944 Forum Moderator.
[FONT=courier new"]
[FONT=courier new"]My car "Beaky" is one of perhaps 25 300+ bhp 944's in the country - (maybe less than 20 within the Club). It isn't immaculate, or of concourse standard because it is owned to be enjoyed and driven. However, "Beaky" is recognized by a good number of 944 owners.
[FONT=courier new"]
[FONT=courier new"]I accept that it is probably high time others "had a chance" to be on the stands but is it not equally important to have enthusiastic people on the stand who will provide interesting cars and talk to potential new members?
[FONT=courier new"]
[FONT=courier new"]I further note that Paul Smith (944 Asst Reg Sec) should have his 3.2 ltr conversion complete prior to the festival. A car of significant interest but not eligible for display because it is the wrong colour.
[FONT=courier new"]
[FONT=courier new"]In short, selection of cars by colour is an appalling concept, based on no other issue than aesthetics and has no bearing on the celebration of great cars. I have every confidence that the field will look lovely in the pictures but will equally position the Club for ridicule as a result.
[FONT=courier new"]
[FONT=courier new"]"What car has your boy friend got Sharon?"
[FONT=courier new"]
[FONT=courier new"]"I don't know but it's really nice - It's red."
[FONT=courier new"]
[FONT=courier new"]
[FONT=courier new"]What a lot of nonsense!
[FONT=courier new"]
[FONT=courier new"]
[FONT=courier new"]Mr Grumpy.
I went out to the garage to tell "Beaky" what had happened and he said
"Is it 'cos I is black?"
