Refinishing recommendations

Hello,

Can you help please?

I have a low mileage 1988 Carrera Supersport which I want to refinish in the original colour (Lagoon Green). The car is not damaged in any way (apart from crappy paintwork) and there is no rust apparent anywhere, despite very careful investigation.

Could you let me have ideas/recommendations as to whom I could trust to do a first class job at manageable money. I have put aside £3k for the work, which, if insufficient, I can top up.

I would stress that I do want a first class piece of work and I am happy to travel to where I can get it.

Any help would be very welcome.
Thanks.

If you are talking about a full glassout job (not worth doing anything else really) consider Roger Bray but I doubt £3,000 would cover it

I've heard fantastic reports of Dave at Daytona Coachworks,24 Orchard Road,Stevenage,SG1 3HE

Done a fair bit of work on 928s on another forum - Dave has a 928 himself - the work looks top class - he is an enthusiast so won't settle until the finish is perfect.

Here's a few pics of 928s he's worked on (the silver one is his)

Bones....suprised you mention R Bray..mainly interested in early 911 and 356's..also heard of some unhappy punters...even though big bucks spent!

I think Ninemeister in Warrington, Cheshire do a great job. see: www.ninemeister.com or ring 01925 242342 and speak to Colin Belton, who owns the company. See his 993 RSR at http://www.pistonheads.com/porsche/default.asp?storyId=7592 for an example. I give this link because their site is being re-written at present.

Hadn't heard that Alan, I withdraw my recommendation if that's the case but all the work I've seen over the years from there has been excellent. I hesitate to recommend anyone for a full respray, it just has to be perfect for the outlay. A guarantee (preferably written) to put right any faults is an absolute must.

Thanks for that. I'll put him on the list for a visit. Some of these people have an extremely high opinion of their abilities and often perfomance fails to match the words- much like some politicians?
Difficulty is that my own refinishing skills (www.jrs.uk.com) are pretty fair but my work is motorcycle sized, thus both equipment and booths are inadequate
However, I know a good piece of work when I see it. I also know that arguments about quality AFTER a job is finished are impossible, so best be as sure as possible about as many aspects as possible befor the start - thus the original plea for help.
Thanks again for your suggestion, much appreciated. If there are more out there, pass them on please.

Thanks.

Excellent thread, I too, would like a quality respray and wondered where I should go and how much I would expect to pay for my 1984 Carrera 3.2 Targa.

Hi Mike,

I also have a 1988 Carrera in Lagoon Green[;)] ...I will need a respray on the front and rear bumpers soon, I would be very be intrested in what you find out/how good a finnish you get once the job is complete?

Thanks

TopGun at Tackley (near Oxford) have an excellent reputation, I think Autofarm take their cars there for paint. 01869 331323.

I had mine re-sprayed last year at Langley Autocraft near Watford.

I had the car professionally waxed last week and the bloke commented on the high quality of the work.

So, I've made further enquiries from various refinishers. I have described the condition of my car to all, trying to use very much the same desciption in every case. I have asked for a "ball park figure" for a top quality piece of refinishing.

Langley Autocraft £3 - £4k, probably upper end.
Top Gun £5k
Ninemeister £6k, plus materials £approx £700. (150 hours at £40 per hour)

All plus VAT. In all cases, parts are an additional cost, which is understandable.

As for the rest, I am simply amazed. The "Porsche premium" seems to be alive and well. I, for one will not be paying it because it makes no sense, either in financial terms, or quality terms.

Can the £7k job be twice as good as the £3.5k job, bearing in mind both have been recommended for the quality of their work? Anyway, what's so special about refinishing a Porsche? Special materials? Special booths? special premises? I do not think so - its the Porsche premium. However all is not lost.

I have placed my work: it is due to be started in August and I should be able to collect mid October, which suits me. The spec is wings and doors off, glass out, roof out. Photo record supplied and inspections offered at any point.

I'll detail the exercise, provide images of the work in progress and the completed car in due course on another website. I'll post notice of completion here so anyone who is interested can follow the refinishing through to the end, at which point I will also supply full costs and the name of the refinisher concerned.

In the meantime, thank you, one and all for your assistance.

Good Luck with that Mike I look forward to seeing the step by step report, it's always fascinating to see detailed records of a projects completion.

Mike
No disrespect to your car but 7K must be getting very close to half of what the car is worth I think you are right about the Porsche premium. A 911 is a bit time consuming to strip and rebuild but when all of the bits are out of the way there is not a great surface area left to paint. A lot of people are scared of taking the glass out but there are good screen fitters out there. Taking the wings off means removing the front bumper what if you ask for a price if you strip and reassemble the car?

Baz,

Thanks for that.

I dismissed part DIY from the start. I have not got the time and I did not think that it should be necessary when spending £3k on refinishing a car and still do not.

My original budget still stands - it's now a matter of the quality of the work alone. Judging by the work already inspected and the quality of the cars being restored/refinished, I do not see that as a problem - even accepting that I am a picky git.

We will see!! One way or another, good, bad or indifferent, I will post the project history on the dedicated website and post notice of completion here.

Thanks again, Baz,

Mike
