Refitting hatch

A couple of questions

1. Should I apply any sealant to the hatch plate / bolts when I refit it? I'm sure its probably a case of tightening them up in line and the whole thing will be waterproof - but its worth asking the question.... I don't have rubber seals on either side. Haynes (I know its not popular) doesn't mention seals - but it also failed to mention the wiper cable...

2. How do I remove the strut connectors (the bit the struts screw in to) off the old hatch - do they just pull or is there something holding them in place that needs undoing?
