Refurb or replace? (wheels)

I spoke to a wheel refurbisher today about removing 20 years of use from the wheels - all the normal stuff, mostly paint lifting and the odd little scuff. The cost was 85+V for each wheel. I also need 2 new front tyres.

This got me thinking about how much a set of good condition used wheels and tyres would be... and saw these:

I have Design 90 wheels fitted to my 964 and these are the CUP wheels, which I prefer to be honest (I assume they are directly compatible).

I've spoken with the shop to ask about general condition and check they are genuine and its thumbs-up.

On the basis that these will cost about £300 - it seems I would be mad not to go for them. If they end up cheaper all the better.

As anyone else had a similar dilemna?

I think the 16" Cup 1 wheels are one of the nicest wheels for the 964 - and they were an original offering on the 964. They somehow look a little more fragile than the 17" versions - the spokes are a little slimmer - but, nevertheless, completely in keeping with the car. The BIN price of £325 seems reasonable compared to your refurb price for the D90s but you'll need SOME new tyres at least. None of the ones fitted are N-rated (if that matters to you) but the big difference in tread depth will mean some will have to be replaced, if not all.

You can get a few quid for the D90s on eBay to offset the cost.

I like the idea of getting the D90s refurbed in slow time, to keep with the car (I'm not so good at selling as I am buying[:)])

The problem with the current D90s is that they're quite tatty and really let the car down.

I hear what you are saying about the N rated tyres - it is a shame. I haven't put new tyres on yet so I'm not sure which way I will go - I'll probably try to keep as close to the OE rubber as possible.
 
Those are very nice wheels. I had a set on mine for a while. However, before you buy them decide if you really want another set of 16 inch wheels. For me they were too small and a wrong decision. 17 inch wheels look so much better on a 964 and a larger, wider wheel gives much more grip.

I see Porscheshop does replica Cup 1 wheels as a set and expensive as well , but do you know of anyone else who sells new replica cup 1 wheels as google doesn't seem to be very helpfull ;-(
 
You grabbed a bargain there. I had a peak and they went for a song, I guess 16" wheels are not in high demand!
 
On the subject of wheels and tyres - on my 1992 964 I have 18" Turbo Twist wheels with 224/40Z Dunlops on the front and 265/35Z on the rear. They look good and fill the arches well, but I find the ride a bit harsh and am always worried about kerbing them.
I am thinking about changing to 17" Turbo Twists. A friend has them on his car with 205/50ZR Pirellis on the front and 225/40ZRs' on the rear. They give much the same appearance as my combination. I have had a ride in this car and it is a bit softer on our rough Norfolk roads, but not hugely so.
I have been offered a set of Turbo Twist wheels - 17" x 7" and 17" x 8.5", but can't fathom out whether they are going to look like my friend's combo. when fitted with appropriate tyres.
The other issue is offset. I don't know how many different offsets were made, but these wheels are said to be 50ET and 55ET which I understand is the offest, which can only be seen by taking a wheel off and looking inside the rim - which I have yet to do. I assume the safest way is to get the actual straight line measurements from the inside edge of the rim to the hub bearing face and compare.
Can anyone give me any guidance on whether these wheels are likely to be suitable and, if not, what should I be looking for?
