REfurbish seats

Just like to report that with the use of seat dye(glympton) i "redyed"(repainted) the front seats of my 993 cab which were Marble grey. It took about 6 coats spaced out over a week and I used a sponge to apply used just over half of the 250ml bottle, bought the kit. The number of coats was to get a solid colour with no streaks. You are basically applying until you get a consitant colour.

The finish was softer and nicer than the reconnolised seats I had done previously and about a sixth of the cost!

Happy now that after one attempt that if I can do it, anyone can do it!

I'd be very interested in how well they wear. I'd always been a bit concerned that this type of treatment would only last for a short period of time and had resigned myself to having to pay to get the seats re-leathered at some time in the future. If this treatment lasts it would be a real cost saver!

Don't suppose you've got any "before and after" photos Gordon?

I've thought about this process for the outside bolster of my drivers seat a few times but always talked myself out of it. The finish to the bolster has been rubbed away as the (rather large) first owner slid in and out of the car. Strangely in the eleven years I've had it the wear has not really got any worse dispite putting another 85 thousand miles on it. I treat it periodically with leather feed which disguises it a bit but that's all.

Did you have any bits where the colour was gone or was it just to treat the creases and did you treat the whole seats or just the worn sections?

Like Anton I would also be keen to hear how well it wears

 
This is before and the after should be attached to the original posting!

There was plenty of cracking, small patches completely worn through, for the cracks you are meant to fill them a bit with the a few layers first instructions with bottle. I did the whole of both seats.

One thing youll notice is the true colour of the marble grey is about 10 shades lighter! than the dirty old grey colour they are now. Marble grey almost looks cream in bright light. The difference in picture is actual.

If you dont want to do the whole seat by a 60ml bottle and just touch up the cracks with a couple of layers which will keep the damaged area as dark as the rest of the seat as the darker damaged area will darken the dye. If you put anymore on you will have to do the whole seat to match.

Well its £37 for the 250ml bottle which is about a 30th of the costs of recovering two seats and therefore if you dont like it and it only lasts a few years you've not lost much
.

By the way wear and tear will be more down to mileage/ getting in and out of the car.

My driver's bolster looks like it's about as worn as yours but as my seats are black they should be much easier to colour. I might even get away with just doing the bolster as the remainder of the seats aren't too bad.

Looks like I've just talked myself into another job. But it'll have to wait, I've got the front pads and discs to do this week-end (including the back plates which are really rusty) and then I've got to take the door panels off and try and work out why the side windows are rattling.
