regarding oval dash

Hi, I have an oval dash 944S2 (1990- 153k miles) which has three cracks in the dash top running forward from steering wheel end to the windscreen. I know square dash models had this problem but does anyone have any info on how to fix please, Thanks in anticipation Cliff.

Replace the dashboard. Buy a nice used example in the same colour on eBay, will take you a full afternoon, best with another man helping. Sounds and looks harder than it is, done one myself a few months ago, I have pics I think., I'll post up..

Work in progress, and after!!

Replacement is the obvious answer, as there are good ones still out there at reasonable prices. I'd live with it myself, until the dash had to come out for something else.

You can have the cracks filled, but I've never seen it look right, and can't believe it wouldn't fail as the dash moves under temp/humidity changes.

One thought, is there anything worth doing whilst the dash is out? Heater matrix, maybe, as they have failed occasionally?

As Shark said, replacing it is an option but quite a big one and if you have an unusual colour dash then it may take a while to find a replacement (try finding blue-over-linen, for instance.)

You can re-cover them, according to this video here:

I've not tried it, but it doesn't look hard. Although I bet it is easier (and you'll get a better result) if you remove it beforehand.

Oli.

As said try to find a decent one in the same colour and replace it.

What colour is the dash you have now?

I'm going to pull my dash again when I get bored, fill the cracks and cover it in a Topgaiters black leather cover with red stitching.

A guy up here had hid 911 dash covered with one and it looks very nice indeed.

A lot of the yanks go in for this, there are lots of leather trim options available to fit upon a current dash..

example.. leather dash kit 944

..they have lots of other interesting options too.. I prefer stock myself..though a few of the items I do like!

Recovering video looks great... wish I had tried that. I would still want to take the dash out to do it though.
Replacing the dash is fiddly and time consuming but not hard. I combined it with replacing the heater matrix which is a pig of a job because the heater box needs to be moved.

I bought a good secondhand dash off ebay. It was a bit faded but I sprayed it with vinyl dye. It's like paint but it soaks into the plastic and changes the colour, rather than sitting on top. It won't scratch or rub off. You can also change the colour with it as long as it's to a darker shade.

Hi Thanks for that, I will start the search - didnt expect to find one - nice to know you have done it succesfully

If you took the Dash to a professional retrimmer I don't think it would be crazy expensive,it would look pukka and no need to find another dashboard?

I've not seen the US kits in RHD before, so thanks for that.

Given that any dash will eventually go the same way, I'd be thinking a leather kit, probably fitted by a specialist as Mark suggests.

Thanks guys for your suggestions and help. Mine is black and I have spotted one or two plus what looks like detailed instructions, www.tech.rennlist.com, The stitched leather covers look good but stuck on top I am guessing there would be problems refitting instruments/fittings because of the reduced appertures- some trimming required!Yes I have considered living with it until another job necessitates dash removal Regards Cliff Baltic Blue 944S2

Where are you based? I have one in a car in Scotland that you can have if you come and do the work yourself. It is pretty good I think but I can check if you are interested?

Hi Thanks for that, whilst I love Scotland and visit every year I am in Lincolnshire- think I will pursue a more local ,option for now.
