Hi Folks – here we go again.
Next year’s trip will be, at the request of our RO, a trip to Northern Ireland, via the Isle of Man. For those of you unfamiliar with the IoM, it is a lovely island in the way of old-fashioned countryside with no speed restrictions outside of common sense and an opportunity to cruise round the TT course plus other scenic routes we hope the local Porsche enthusiasts can advise us on.
At present, I have pencilled in fifteen double rooms, with breakfasts, for three nights at the Mount Murrey hotel and golf resort just by Douglas, for 15th to 18th May 2020. Any later and we bump into the IoM TT races, which means crowds and greater expense. I guess we can expect motorcyclists haring around as pretend racers even on the earlier dates we have.
My current thinking is to sail to Belfast on 18th May, to stay three nights in Carrickfergus. That allows us to visit Belfast and cruise the eastern part of the coastal road. There is plenty to see and do on the way, apart from the driving, with castles , gardens, coastal rambles, beaches and "Dark Hedges” – Kings Road for Game of Thrones fans. Then we can take the inland route to near the Giants Causeway and "do” the northern part of the coastal route towards our limit on the previous days and the rest of the coastal route to Derry/Londonderry. We should reserve one day to see the Causeway and the Bushmills distillery. The Ireland RO has recommended two appropriate hotels, but I haven’t reserved anything pending getting a better idea of numbers and preferred dates. I am aware some are otherwise occupied on the dates I currently have in mind (15th to 24th May), but can perhaps change that to 2nd to 10th May if the majority prefer.
For those with more time on their hands, we can perhaps extend the stay to take in the wild Atlantic way and return via Dublin. Let me know if you want to do that and I will see what can be arranged.
I am limiting the number of cars to 15, as any more than that gets difficult for booking hotels and arranging meals etc. Plus some of Ireland’s enthusiasts may want to join us either in IoM or Ireland. If more of Region 13 want to join in, I am happy to pass on trip notes, but must leave it to the "extras” to make their own arrangements, as last year I caused confusion at hotels booking a dozen rooms, but wanting meals for several more people.
So – please come back to me at ian.crosskell@lineone.net asap if you want to signup and let me know your preferred dates and wether you want to return via Belfast or Dublin (with extra days for the last).
PS check out "Causeway coastal route” on the internet to get a view on what you could be seeing.
