relay queery

To fault trace as to why my radiator fan comes on even when I have left the car for ages, I was going to try another fan relay.I have taken the relay out and when I cross reference the numbers on the relay944.615.22700 it says dme relay on it.
Is this relay likely to have any bearing on the fan playing up?

I got the relay in question in front of me and p/n: 944.615.104.03 - and yes they are around £100 new....................... There is a way you can check the relay - i think on clarks garage - Im sure somebody else be along shortly.

Looked at diagram for '84 car - guessing similar - fan relay should be very simple 4 pin type. A DME is 6 pin so daft question is - have you got the right relay?
Assuming it is fitted in the right place, either the switch is permanantly "on" or the relay is u/s.

affirmative a 1984 should have a single fan and a single relay. I believe Its only the turbo and 16v cars that have a double relay . Plus any car fitted with A/con

Have you replaced the radiator sensor yet CC ?
 
The relay that I need is a 5 pin 944.615105.01
Wonder if anybody has a spare one please?

any standard single radiator fan relay will do as long as the spade terminals are in the same positions as yours and the numbers of the terminals are the same. It is just a standard spst relay nothing special . You could probably use a Mercedes or VW item .
You need to check the resistor which is in parallel across the relay output terminals.

As you can see from the schematic the relay coil is constantly live from the battery and is earthed by the radiator temperature sensor in the radiator. When the temperature reaches the switch's temp setting it completes the circuit to earth and switches the fan on.

If you want to test your radiator fan and fan relay just disconnect the cable connector to the radiator temperature switch and put a piece of wire across the connector terminals . This will efectively act as though your rad temp sensor had switched on due to high temperature.

If the fan doesn't run check that one of the terminals go to earth or alternatively connect either or both terminals to a good earthing point on the chassis using a short piece of wire
 
Chances are it will be the rad fan sensor - sounds exactly the same problem I had a couple of months ago.

New sensor from Bert Gear and all solved.

You can get an early 2 pin connector jobbie for about £10 from GS&F
