I noticed that the rubber actuator of one of the tactile switches on the pcb inside my key fob has perished quite badly - it's the original part so, 24 years old, not bad for a bit of rubber. It had perished so badly, the switch doesn't actually work any more.
However, that doesn't necessarily mean you need to pay to replace it. Swapping out the TACT switch is a relatively easy job. You'll need a soldering iron, a pair of tweezers and a new switch. The component you need is a ksr221g tactile switch made by C&K components. The components aren't expensive and there's a number of places you can get one. Shipping for most places is about a fiver, but if you've got a RS Online trade desk near you, you can collect for free.

If after attempting to fix the issue, you still need to buy a new fob, then you won't have had to shell out too much to give it a try - in my view, definitely worth trying first.
