Removal and replacement of wheel centres

Andrew,

The wheel centres are push fit. If you look carefully they have two small holes in them.

I cut length of wire (6") from a coat hanger.

Then bend the wire to create a U shape.

Then bend the two ends by about 1/2" back 90 Degree so they are facing out of the U shape.

You have now made a handy removal tool!

Insert each end into the holes of the wheel cap and then pull on the section of U that is bent (handle).

Hope thats clear!

Tom.

Yeah, it is scary that it is that simple and anyone can come and nick it. You also get guys selling a proper U-key on ebay...

...but be careful with a home-made ones not to scratch the edges.

Yep.

I found that giving the wheels a clean when the caps were off and then adding a little lubricant to the weheel centres help.

They then don't require so much of a "thwack"! But i'm sure you can pop the new ones on without doing this if you want.

I know a crazy Boxster owner that uses a corkscrew

Probably best to drink a bottle first in order to summon up the courage to give it a try!

...and what happens if you cork them when pulling them off? straight back to OPC for another set ... damn! []

When you next wash and dry the inside of your wheels and check your brake pads, U can push the caps off from behind!!
