Removal of engine advice..

Hi again,

more questions .... what tools do you chaps rely on to remove the engine - trolley jack etc - any custom mods that would be usefull to support the weight, shape ? - such as ...erm wood shelf to rest engine on ....not sure myself yet so just testing water on this one - no real engine stands etc

PS - I am known to my friends as 'The tank-off man' due to me always beeing seen with my motorcycles in the past with their tanks and seat off.. ... so must keep up appearances with the porky these days :)

Well I did my first engine out the other week. Easy Did the whole thing on my own
You need to get the 12 right and I mean right up in the air I have two proper garage jacks so it was reall way up there.

Then use the trypod stands to hold the car.

Then remove the electric cables. Make sure you have disconected the battery mark the cables as well

Remove the heater cables under the car, can be fun to undo
undo the bottom bolts from the engine to gear box 2 of

Fuel line

trolly jack under the engine to take the weight. Undo the engine cross bar at the front as you undo this the engine will drop alittle let the engine down enough so as to get to the back top two engine to gear box bolts and then you jack the engine up alittle then you are ready to give the engine a little pull to get it off the clutch and lower it down can't think of any thing else

here's my 2c

Its easier to take out the engine with two people, especially if you have not done it before. Safety is you main concern, make sure you have a good strong i.e. 2 tonne'ish rating. Make sure your axel stand are up to it too. I would also put the spare wheel under the car too, if you are working by yourself this is very important! Its hard to call for help with your chest being squashed by a Porsche!

Disconnect battery before doing anything else. You will be spilling fuel.

In addition to Marks thougts

Disconnect the throttle rod which goes from the back of the fan shroud down to the link on the gearbox.

Remove the rear number plate panel, for better access

Use a small peice of wood on the jack to stop damage to the sump plate which is your jacking point.

When you have the engine on the jack, one person willl be Jack master, controlled by the person above who is balancing the engine, depending how high you have managed to get the car, this is the part which is tricky, you may find the engine will not lower enough to get it back out (because the car's back end isn't high enough) This is why you need a high lift jack.

Don't forget to support the Gearbox! An additional stand is good for this, if you don't do this the gearbox linkages will get bent £££.

thanks - I hadn't seen that article you mentioned Adam - cool pages he has there :) - as I thought .... raising the car high enough may be a problem with standard jacks etc.

I have done some engine removals including a Mk1 Transit V4 engine using a friend and some ropes (not for wimps) - and Vitesse inline 6 and good old cavalier uisng ropes again slung over shoulders and standing in engine compartment

Don't do this at home kids lol

Looks as if I could do this myself (in theory) as long as equipment is good and up to the job - axles, ramps, trolley's and ....... my good old rope tricks :)

The motorcycle jack stand is excellent idea though - just costly to buy new - but will keep my eyes open for any special prices etc.

I thought of welding up my own kind of support bench in a way to stabilise the engine when supported - will post how it goes when I get around to dropping it out for maintenance .... thanks again for your advice guys :)
 
This a lift for a 911, but you can see the idea. You must be able to stop the motor tipping to one side or the other as it comes out
