Removal of Gear knob and Gaiter - heater blowers

I know this has been covered before so apologies--I am replacing the fairly tatty gear knob on my car--I have removed the centre console but I am not sure how to remove the gear knob--looking at the replacement nothing is obvious--any advice appreciated.

While on the subject--having spent about 2 years sorting out the heater problems with the car--the front left blower now squeals when it has been running some time--I have a replacement second hand blower--I assume it is a bearing problem--is there an easy way to remove the blower and what steps do I need to take--this isn't covered in Adrian's book and the manual I have isn't clear either.

Many thanks for your help

hi steve,

I did mine the other day it was easy ish!!. Does your car have air con?? i belive that the pipes get in the way a bit.

Anyway you need to undo the black bulk head behind the fuel tank.I loosened only the left hand side. This gave me enough room to get my hand down between the fan housing and the black bulk head. There are about 5 or so clips holding the cover on you need to remove these, you should then be able to remove the cover. As you will see there is a hole in the base of the housing that connects to the sill, block this up with something as its easy to drop screws down it!!. If you look at your new fan you will be able to see how it screws onto the mountings. The bird cage does get in the way a bit but it is possible to undo the screws. The fan then just wiggles out. Its connected if i remember with spade terminals so just copy the one you remove.fit all the stuff back together, make sure that the disc in front the fan is seated correctly when putting the cover back on otherwise it hits the mixer flap.

Hope this makes sence!!

Hi Tim

Thanks for that--I will have a go at the blower this weekend or next--

re the the gear knob--it seems set there pretty hard and I have given it a reasonable pull and it refuses to move happy to give it a really good tug but don't want to damage anything--is there any sort of clipping mechanism?

Thanks

Steve

Steve,

It does just pull off although the rubber does tend to grip it well. Some people have found that by sticking something up between the shaft and the knob helps may be some wd might help and a wiggle. Go on wiggle it!!

a post from rennlist...
[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]I had to put a spanner under the knob and hit the bugger with a hammer. Seriously, it would not move. Got it off, finally.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]It maybe a struggle!! [FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Tim[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

Many thanks for the advice---gear knob removed no problem and I basically wedged a small screwdriver up the side and twisted and pulled until it came off.

Re the blower--spent the best part of 2 hours trying to get the 2 securing screws for the blower back in--still haven't succeeded despite bluetac on small screwdriver.

Any advice with these--they were easy to get out as I cut the birds nest off the old blower--but getting them back in is proving to be frustrating.

Many thanks

Steve

steve,

I had the same problem!!

I taped the screw onto the screwdriver with insulation tape. Once it was started it was ok. Porsche do a special tool to remove the birds nest its really just a 2 leg puller. It would make the fitting much easier if you can get that off.

Hope this helps a bit!

Tim
