How difficult is it to remove and replace a gearbox on a 1998 944?.....
I can speak with some authority on this matter as Beaky is undergoing a gearbox transplant at this very moment. It is very easy and takes less than five minutes:-
1. Find a working telephone
2 Pick up receiver and dial appropriate number
3. Hold receiver to ear
4 Say "Hello, please change my gearbox."
Replacement of the receiver is the reverse of the above.
There are some jobs you do, and there are some jobs you don't. In my mind anything that involves being under a car holding heavy things, and being covered in the worst black smelly oil this side of a primeval tar pit, is best left to the professionals.

find that you suddenly have 5 reverse gears and only one forward) []
Don't forget that you will then qualify for the Register prize for the first 944 to break 200mph IN REVERSE []

It is a little awkward but once you get over the fear of whether the car will fall off the 4 axle stands you have it on then I would say an average mechanically minded person could have it out in a couple of hours.
The clarks garage instructions seem to be quite accurate - I used them with no hassles.
Good Luck!
