Removing front speaker grilles

OK, I've pulled them, twisted them, checked for screws and tried prising them off with a covered screwdriver blade and all to no avail! Just how do you remove the front speaker grilles? I have a 1996 993 Targa with just the simple 5.25" speakers at the front and seperate tweeters higher up. These standard fit speakers don't seem up to it and would like to replace them. I see the replacement side has been covered extensively before, I just need to know how to remove the grilles so that I don't end up showered in bits of plastic. Unless, of course, the speaker grilles are integral to the door panel and I have to remove the entire panel to get to the speakers underneath (hope not!!!).

Many thanks,
David.

David,

If I remember correctly when I did it, you have to take the door panel off to get to the speakers.

[:)] Thanks, my wifes idea really!
I guess I need to play about a bit and change my 'non member' status and also load up a suitable pic.

Appreciate the advice chaps, with the current weather the car's really going nowhere so I'll have another go despite me being a touch groggy this morning (I'm an avid Luton Town fan so any footie folks out there willl know why...).

Regards, David.

Thanks Maurice, I'll give them a call.

Had a wrestle with the speaker grilles this afternoon and finally got them off. Found using a couple of teaspoons worked quite well. The rounded backs giving protection to the door panel and providing some leverage as well. Similar to the tyre lever principle for bicycles I guess. The top 2 screws holding the speaker in were easy, for the lower 2 I had to take the door pocket off, just a matter of 5 or 6 screws and the 2 clips that attach the speaker wires, a pair of green and a pair of white and white/brown. I presume the green pair are used to feed the tweeter? If so, my first thoughts are to leave the tweeters disconnected and a buy a pair of speakers that will do the full range. I'll do some on-line research from here on.

Looking at the speaker itself I now know why Nokia moved into mobile phones.....

Cheers, David.

Are you refitting your original speaker grilles or might they be for sale.

Hi Steve, the car is totally original so all the bits will be going in a box in the attic. Thanks for asking though.

David.

Best way to get around the problem of the amplifier is to replace the speakers and the cd player and run new upgraded speaker cables between the two. It's a fairly straightforward job on the 993 and makes for more of a 'complete' upgrade.
