Removing headlight unit

I'm attempting an HID upgrade and fell at the first hurdle ...

Getting the headlight units out - I've followed the handbook and turned the toolbox socket thing 180 and the headlight unit has released from the wing about 1 to 2 cm, but that's it. A gentle pull didn't budge the unit any more - do you just have to pull really hard, or have I missed something.

I have visions of me flying backwards holding a bit of broken plastic if I pull too hard !

Any suggestions gratefully received, although it'll have to wait till daylight for attempt #2.

After it has released, twist and wiggle the socket as you pull the headlight unit. It should come out quite smoothly.

Edit: There are pins on each side of the headlight unit which go into slots in the carrier frame. The cranked locking bar (in the frame) locks into the underside of the headlight.

Thanks - that was quick - will try that technique in the morning - hope you don't spend all weekend browsing the forum !

Don't forget that having turned the handle to release the unit you'll need to turn it back slightly to ensure that it's fully disengaged. Should slide out very easily then.

Thanks everyone - got them out OK today. Seems my offside one (the one I first tried yesterday) requires a lot more wiggelling that the nearside. Anyway, attempted to fit the HID lamps, but could only get one side working - so have since inserted and removed the headlamp units about 20 times now and have got the hang of getting them in and out!

The socket for the headlight unit has a habit of slipping in the mounting bracket in the front wing - worth checking there for a bad contact.

Nothing important, but I was wondering if anyone knows what the short cable is for in the nearside wing.

having removed the headlight unit I saw a metal cable with a loop on it, which disappeared to the front/centre of the car. It looked like it might be an emergency boot release or something like that (I didn't pull it in case all my radiators fell out!). But, if so, why there, because you can't get to that space without removing the headlight which means having access to the boot in the first place? Anyone any ideas ?

It is indeed the emergency boot release - it is supposed to be accesible from the little tiny hole in the wheelarch liner.
Not without removing the wheel and liner first methinks...

This is really worth noting. The socket mounted on the bracket is held in place by a plastic clip. The clip slides up to secure the socket and very often the socket can become loose because the clip is not firmly engaged. As a result, the corresponding connection on the headlamp unit doesn't engage as it should (if at all) and nothing works correctly (that is, the indicator and the sidelight won't work). Worth watching out for this.
