Removing heat exchangers and exhaust

I am planning to replace the whole exhaust system on a 1989 911 cabriolet. I have read about the possibility of breaking studs.

My question is; can you cut away most of the old heat exchanger to gain better access to the nuts and studs holding the manifolds??

Can it be done? Does it really help?

Hi Roger. Yes you can cut away as much as you need to. But the best thing is oxeye & acetylene and cherry red the nuts to undo.
Cut away the silencer first across the back as this is quite heavy. Or if you are neer a garage have them undo the manifold nuts and put some new ones on so you can drive home. If you are need me I will do that for you.

Hi Charles

Thanks for your reply, I can use JMG Porsche (near me in Dorset) to remove the nuts and deal with any broken studs, I can do the rest. What a sensible idea, why didn't I think of that!!

This car has a great history and is very original, would you replace with a Porsche part or go for a stainless steel one from a supplier like Dansk?

Hi
Dansk do a stainless one the kit is about £2k there are outher suppliers pay your money take you choice.

you could try Type 911. and Euro car parts.. for prices.

15 years ago Tim had the standard exhaust removed witch had only done 25k miles and had it all sand blasted
and then Hot alloy sprayed it is still just like new after 50k miles.

Hi Roger
I changed the complete system when I did a top end overhaul and I was very lucky that not 1
bolt broke I recommend a Danske they are brill sound good look good and are good.

I had mine replaced HAYWARD&SCOTT not cheap, but sold my old one for 1200 pounds.
So that helped cover the cost on my new system. They also used heat to turn them cherry red to remove the system nuts.

They charge 240 pounds to fit the system.

Thanks Paul

I am going to have a really close look underneath and see if I am brave enough to attempt it!

Thanks for your comments.

Roger
