removing rear wheel bearing...

Morning 912ers....

Anyone know the best way of removing the rear hub from within the wheel bearing?? The workshop manual implies that you just " drive the hub out from the inside" (the CV joint side).... if only it was that easy!!
No amount of banging or pulling has shifted it so far...

Also, Stoddards have a rear bearing puller tool in their catalogue - anyone tried using one? I presume this is only useful for pulling the bearing out of the suspension arm, not for pulling the hub out of the bearing..? I guess you cant start thinking about removing the bearing until the hub is out of the way. Or is there a better way?!

I have just done this job, I used a 10 tonne floor press. You are welcome to come round and use it. The arm WILL need to be off the car!

I have just re-read your post, the above refers to the bearing. The hub comes out much more easily, try tapping the outside with the nut on to protect the thread.
 
Mmm, yes sounds like the job is far easier with the arm off the car.

Thanks for your offer of use of the floor press. I' m away on a trip for the next couple of weeks unfortunately... assuming I havent thought of any other solutions by then, I may get in touch regarding this on my return if thats OK.

Thanks - from his pictures I can see that there must be a few design variations between the different model years. On his car (?year), the driveshaft stub appears to be the component which sits within the wheel bearing. On my ' 69, this driveshaft stub does not do this. Instead it floats on splines within a hub and easily pushes out the back. The hub itself, complete with wheel studs, is the component riding the bearing (and stuck there), and must be driven out from the inside... your suggestion of removing the arm and using a press would definitely be a solution to removing it (and subsiquently the bearing also).

I must buy a digital camera to make this sort of thing easier to discuss!!

I now understand your post referring to tapping the outside with the nut on to protect the thread - that would work for his car. Unfortunately this doesnt seem to count for the ' 69...

I' ve just signed up to the PP forum, so will see if any of those guys with ' 69s have any ideas also.
 
I know what you are trying to do. My flange was siezed into the hub after 15 years on no use. I pried it off by getting a lever between the flange and the hub.

I will scan and email you the page in the workshop manual. Send me PM with your address
 
I think I' ll try the pair of 3ft pry bars, when next I get to work on the car... going to be two week now unfortunately...
