Removing side repeaters?

I have recently purchased an '86 944 Turbo and I'm trying to figure out how to correctly remove the front, wing mounted, side indicator repeaters.

It sounds a bit daft but the lenses are a bit mucky and after 21 years could do with a muck out.

I've managed to refrain from breaking out my crow bar but if someone could help it would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

If I remember correctly from when I changed mine to clear lenses you just lever them out - unless of course I shouldn't have done it like that [&:]

Hope you are enjoying the car btw [:)]

They have a sprung clip - you slide them (from memory backward) against the spring and pop out the lug in the front end, then the back will come out. Clean the paint around them first as you don't want to scratch it with road grime when you slide the repeater.

Just thought I would report back.

The lenses did come off as you suggested. I couldn't quite believe the amount of crud that was living behind them.

Unfortunately, 20 year old plastic doesn't quite have the same flexibility that it once did and I managed to snap one of the plastic clips on one side.

Never mind. I have my Porscheshop catalogue to hand!

Point taken. I'll certainly check with my OPC first.

I've got a fairly healthy list of other bits and bobs I want to get aswell.

Nothing major, I don't want to ruin the patina of old age but I want to get a new set of plastic wheel arch guards and some of the rubber seals (Doors and sunroof) are starting to show signs of perishing.

All in all the car is in pretty good nick. I'm the 4th owner and it only has just over 70,000 miles showing, with plenty of history to prove the same.

Probably even cheaper from a VW / Audi garage. The side repeaters are identical to Golfs and Audi 80/90 of the same era.

I don't think that they are the same as VW ones - just as the door handles aren't either. The look superficially the same but I was given a bag of VW ones in various colours years ago and the didn't fit in the hole in the Porsche wing.

I didn't mean your local OPC, I specifically meant Exeter. Ring them (01392 822800) and speak ideally to Chris in parts and tell him you're from "the forum" and a discount will be forthcoming.

If that's the case I apologise for misleading. I should have pointed out that I was only passing on what I had heard and have not tried this myself. If Fen has tried VW ones without success his information is more accurate than mine.

Boys, boys.

As it happens VW haven't got any left on the shelf. They would have been £6.99 as opposed to £10.34 from Porscheshop. Not a great difference but, easier for me to collect.

Thanks for the nod Fen.

They are not a million quid each from Porscheshop so I may just include them in with an order for some other bits.

Worth qualifying that the ones I tried were for VW rather than by VW, though I believe they did fit the Mk2 Golf they were intended for. I forget why they didn't fit and maybe a trim with a knife or Dremel would fix it, but for the sake of £4 I wouldn't want to be bothered myself.

Bert always says the door handles don't fit - I haven't tried them though I have read several times that they are the same. I trust Bert to know though.

My understanding is that the side repeaters are the same as Mk2 VW golf. Try Euro car parts, they list genuine orangeones for £1.15!

£1-15 wow, - I have to say that's clever......[8|]

I need some orange ones because mine broke too, brittle clip - or more likely I'm not too clever

Let us know if they fit - at £1.15 it's worth a gamble, but I'm still thinking they won't.

VW ones fit all my three Porsches and a strangely enough my Golf Mk1

In fact I can't tell you now which are which in my spare orange sidelight collection. None VW clear ones are a poor fit.

Cheers,

I haven't removed or fitted them, but upon closer examination both of mine have the four Audi rings on them.

Just thought I would post the latest info I have.

Yesterday I received a box of lovely shiney bits from Porscheshop, including a pair of new side repeaters.

Suprise, suprise when I studied them they had the VAG logo on them. The logo is on the grey plastic reverse and not on the amber lense.

When I checked my originals they also have the VAG logo! The only difference I could spot between old and new was that the originals were made by Hella and the new ones weren't. Not quite sure who they are made by.

Anyway, I'm well pleased with what Porscheshop have supplied. The new units came complete with bulbs, bulb holders and the rubber lense surround.

Job done!
