Removing the rear lights ?

Hi,

I need to reseal round the one rear light as it's letting in a bit of water. The light unit seems to be well fixed in with black sealant (the factory stuff I think) and I don't want to break the light trying to prise it out.

Anyone got any 'sensible' [;)] tips for how to remove it ??

Cheers
Richard

Never done it myself mate but IIRC this topic has been well covered before if you do a search. I am sure someone will be along soon with a handy link. Try clear rear indicator lenses I am sure it featured heavily in there.

I changed mine when I got a set with clear indicator lenses. After you have undone the various nuts/screws, you need to heat the sealent with a hairdryer and bit by bit it will soften off and you can gradually prise the light unit away from the bodywork. Of course you will need some replacement sealant (Dum Dum IIRC) when you put the units back.

Thanks Jon.

So heat is the answer, no wonder I was struggling to shift it in todays sub zero temperature, the gum was like concrete ! [&:]

Yup heats the thing and if mine were anything to go by it does take quite a lot of of wafting with the hairdryer to get them on the move, so if it does seem like its not working - Persevere !

I've done this - put in the clear indicators while I was in there as well. I think I just undid the white finger screw/nut to remove the back cover then undid the 4 or so nuts around the outside holding rest of the cluster in. I'm pretty sure it just pulls away after that!
The left over sealant was a big pain, I think I used a plastic scrapy thing (tm) to get most off.... and maybe some white spirit but I don't recall it being that useful.

A few things though - the nuts holding it on are damn awkward to get at and theres a danger of dropping them down into the cavity under the battery compartment too.
I used some water proof sealant I got from a local hardware shop to seal them back up - make sure its not an adhesive or it'l be a PITA to get the cluster back out.
Oh and use LOTS AND LOTS of it. Put loads on the back before you put it back on, in the little recesses as I recall. Also put some on the car before it goes back on to bond to. I used one of those squirty guns with a long nozzle and put LOADS in all around the whole thing afterwards. Even after all that water still got into one of them which made me nearly fill the recess around cluster. So, to sum up, put loads of sealant on [:D]

Hope that helps!

I'll edit for spelling in't morning....

you can get the proper sealant from OPC for under a tenner IIRC

I have a roll going spare...

A bit of warm air wont hurt, but you remove the rear lamps by sitting on the load deck and pushing them out with your feet. Having a catcher will help.

Just tried Hatfield OPC and they denied all existance of a sealant so I'll try the local bodyshop for some dum dum (in a gun) unless you can send me your spare edh ??

Like your extraction suggestion 944man but how tough are the rear lights? It would just be my luck to break it into a million pieces !

Richard you don't need a gun for the Dum Dum. Just need to roll it into sausages, attach said sausages around the edges of the gap where the cluster goes and then insert the cluster.

Pushed mine out with my feet as well, after removing the bulb cluster. I bought a roll of 10mm dia butyl sealant from ebay, which is similar to the original sealant.

It is a black mastic - I think Sealastic - comes in a tube that can be applied using a silicon gun. Leave the old stuff on the light so that you know where to apply the new sealant to. A small bead of it oround the actual holes in the back panel won't do any harm.
If at all possible do it in a warm garage and apply some gentle heat (hair dryer) to the bodywork before putting in the light unit.

Cheers,
