Rendezvous at the Ring by the Three Amigo's

Well have just got back from the Little circuit they call the Nurburgring!
An interesting place to visit and one I think everyone should tick off their list.
It was an eventful road trip and like always in the Boxster a wonderful experience.
We stayed at a place called Gillenfeld, why u may ask?
Well because the entire hotels surrounding the circuit were fully booked for the World Superbike weekend and the Glp race series on the Sat.
This did not deter moi,so the hotel chosen was the Maar Perle in Gillenfeld, some 37km,from the circuit, but fabulous roads to this warm place,
and the scenery by the Pulvar lake exquisite.
Anyway on to the exciting race event, and we all arrived on the Sunday morning at start of the Nordscheif.
All the drivers here are serious hardcore, complete nutters and ready for some serious pedal to metal.
I only wish had taken some videos on my phone of their faces before they exit the barrier and enter the circuit, pure adrenalin!
After viewing this I decided not to take my car around and hire a Renault Clio Rs sport.
This proved to be a good idea, but maybe not one to repeat!
I had the drivers briefing which was very helpful and explained that nearly every lap about 4-5 crashes occur, and that just about everybody is on the track,"full of tourists".
Well I was on vacation as well and wanted to get back in one piece so paid an extra 100 euro for the tuition instruction, which I think was money well
spent as my instructor was brilliant knowing every inch of the track, and advising when to accelerate back off and overtake.
It's a great feelin being able to slide a car into a corner and power out!
The car I drove was paddle shift and had race tires which for me were amazing, one comment the instructor kept saying"speed ok don't brake the tires will grip",this going into a corner doesn't help when you are sliding, and then you push the throttle hard and slide out!
Anyway after an about 3 laps the track closed because a car had caught fire
and was in a dangerous position.
I decide to call it a day and return the awesome Renault to it's home,
RSRNurburg are the company, and it was not cheap about £450 for 4 laps with fuel, inc lapcosts, and instructor, but the waiver is high some £8000 for the car,but that's not expensive if you hit or damage the circuit barriers it £250 per metre, except they do not sell 1metre lengths so it's £1000 each and there the barriers are stacked four so potentially the repair to the circuit
is higher than the car repair, also clutches or gearbox are £1750,£3000 for the Renault gearbox.
Did I sign this er yep at the time, would I do it again erm no!
But an awesome experience and I will definately go back to the ring, and find
Another race car hire firm to use, which will not cause or is likely to cause
some financial ruin!
My what a circuit, but some caution is needed!

Some caution, I'd go so far as to say - stay away on Touristfahrten days and only go on a closed circuit. It's carnage these days.

This was my last visit - bedlam. Big smash with British M3 and race 911 followed by the ring taxi M3 taking out the Corvette circuit car. My then Z4MC and mates T350C were seconds from being involved.

I decided to go early this year (April) which was a risk weather wise. I've usually gone summertime for the past 8 years. Other than it being cold, there were less cars (and hardly any bikes) and it was great (managed 20 laps). The problem on TF days these days are people who think they are much better than they actually are (too many PS3 laps) with a combination of a lack of respect for other drivers. A recipe for many expensive accidents.

I've been lucky but had a couple of moments. Respect the Ring!

BTW I've had an RS 200 engine go bang on me half way round the ring, thank heavens for warranty [:)]

Cheers,
Simon

[:-]Wow thanks for the heads up!
I'm thinking had a lucky escape, there were a lot of cars mainly Porsches which were being brought back on the Breakdown trailers.
The atmosphere was pretty electric and a lot of spectators watching on the last corner onto the straight.
Maybe next time,Spa Francoschamps.
