Renewing door seals

nottage

New member
I am about to renew the door and roll bar seals on my targa and wondered if anyone has any suggestions for removing the glue left on the paintwork from the old seals.

Will white spirit work or do I need to use a stronger solvent?

Also which glue should I use to stick the new seals on with?

Rgds,

Kevin

Kevin,

I renewed my door seals on a coupe about 2 year's ago. I was very fortunate that I could literally just peel off the old glue (like peeling skin!) - so no need for white spirit.
I used bostik multi purpose glue to glue the new seals back on. I haven't had any problems with the seals coming loose.

hope this helps

Use Evo-Stick solvent that should remove the old glue which has always been a crusty mess when I've had to replace seals. If you use an impact adhesive make sure you do a dry run with chalk marks on the seals to aid exact fitting. If you want specialist advice on glues call David at Southbound motor trimmers.

Kevin,
Saw your message about the door & roll bar seals.
My seals are rather knackered and was thinking of replacing them.
Do they come off easy ?
Are there any bits to be aware of ?

Thanks
Myles

Hi Myles,

I haven't had the time to do this yet, but have bought the evo-stick solvent and don't expect too many problems with getting the old ones off. I will be buying 4 new pins for the rear seal just in case I break the ones on the car now (hugely expensive at £1 each). The hard part will be getting the new seals in exactly the right position.

Rgds,

Kevin

Don't forget you can stretch the seals to fit (especially on a hot day) and also where the door seal meets the Targa roll-bar seals you can blob a little super glue in there once you are happy with the fit for additional sealing between the horizontal edges.
