Repair Detaching Steering Wheel

The outer steering wheel (leather and foam) is detaching from the inner metal wheel (it twists in my hands). Can anyone recommend a company that can fix this please? I did a search and found Royal Steering Wheels recommended and I have asked them for a quote. I am after alternatives/recommendations. To be clear, I want to keep the original leather and look as-is, i.e. I don't want it recovered.

Royal do a great job recovering wheels and they did a nice job on my 987 Cayman S. Not a bad place to get a replacement wheel as they seem to have a healthy stock of blanks and would fit it for you without firing off the airbag or dis-connecting the battery. The guy knows his stuff.

Thanks for the responses. Sounds like Royal have a good reputation. I am waiting for the quote from them for the repair. I will keep this thread updated with progress.

Had a response back from Royal. They are unable to repair without re-covering the steering wheel. The photo they sent of a newly covered steering wheel looks great but also looks brand new (textured leather). My concern is that it will stand out in a 20 year old interior. It's not like the wheel is in urgent need of repair (its only starting to go) so I am in two minds whether to get it done. The quote I think is great value at £185 inc VAT and plus P&P. Turnaround time is 1–2 weeks which seams reasonable too.

For the benefit of anyone else thinking of getting this repair, here is an update on how things went with Royal Steering Wheels. Even though my quote was from last May they still honoured it. I was promised a 1-2 week turnaround and they were good to their word (with a few days to spare). Thanks everyone for the recommendation, I am very happy with the results.

The craftsmanship on the recover and stitching is outstanding and the leather is a great match to the original texture too. Although black, it is a little lighter shade than the centre of the steering wheel but it just needs cleaning a few times to bring the shine and colour depth up. The repair is perfect and there is no movement of the outer part on the inner.

A few notes on removing and re-fitting:

[ul][*]Bear in mind that you need to disconnect the battery for 15 minutes to safely remove the airbag.[*]You need to keep the key in the ignition at the first position to stop the alarm going off.[*]I locked the front bonnet with the battery disconnected and didn't realise that it could not be opened without the battery connected! If I did it again, I would ensure that I had reconnected the battery. To open the bonnet, refer to your Drivers Manual as you need to supply power to a specific terminal on the fuse box (easy when you know how).[*]Don't forget to mark the position of the steering wheel on the spline to make it easy to realign the steering wheel. Use a Sharpie or similar and mark the spline and the steering wheel (not the nut)[*]Be aware that you will have the airbag light on your dash on permanently until you can take the vehicle somewhere that has the coding tool to clear it (I'm due in for service soon so will get it done then).[/ul]
