Repairing your own MFI pump

If anyone is having problems with their MFI pump, I have recently finished writing a book on the repair and calibration of the PED 6 KL mechanical fuel injection pumps. My book covers the repair of the pumps, building a home test rig and how to calibrate the pump to the correct Bosch factory settings. It is aimed at the DIY home mechanic so is very detailed, covering every step in an easy to understand and follow manner.

The book is 160 pages and contains over 300 photos as well as detailed fabrication drawings for making special tools where required and diagrams of the test rig. Also included is the calibration data needed for setting the pump up, with explanation of what to do. The book is A4 spiral bound with full colour laminated card covers front and rear. The internal photos are high resolution monochrome.

Further details and extracts of my book can be seen on my new web site www.911mfi.com if anyone wants to take a look.

Only info I can't find is what are your qualifications/experience to write this book.......important in giving potential buyers confidence before parting with almost £60 I think, but knowing how much pump overhaul is these days, quite a bargain!

I am a Chartered Building Surveyor by Profession, with a BSc (Hons) degree in surveying and I am a Professional Associate Member of the RICS and MBEng, but I am also a qualified Technical Illustrator and Draftsman with a mechanical engineering background.

I am not a Bosch trained engineer, but that is the point. My book is intended to be simple to follow, where as the Bosch technical documents are not. The book is written from the perspective of a knowledgeable enthusiast, for other DIY owners.

I have been restoring cars for over thirty years and have restored many cars to Concours and Elite level.

My interest in the Bosch mechanical fuel injection system started about 10 years ago with ownership and restoration of two Aston Martin DBS V8 cars. These use a similar injection pump, and require the same repair and calibration as the Porsche 911 PED 6 KL pumps.

I have restored the early and late Porsche PED 6 KL 60/120 and the PES 8 KL 75/120 pumps used by Mercedes and Aston Martin over the years, as well as the associated induction systems and tuning.

My own early Porsche 911, was purchased as a wreck, and has been restored by myself, being converted to ST specification in the process.

I hope this helps.

Oh yes.......more than, thanks.
Only other info please.....how much do I need to spend to kit myself up for such an overhaul? [8|]

If you have normal servicing tools in your workshop then to repair the pump is about £150 in parts, unless your pump is damaged.

If you want to build your own test rig then is should be about £350 to cover the cost of speed controller and motor, £35 for the test tubes. The fuel lines and other fittings add perhaps another £50. If you don't have a DTI and have someone make the special tools for you then add another £200, but you can do the work without the tools if you are prepaired to improvise a bit. All in, it's a lot less than sending it away.
