Replace 993 with 997?

I have owned a 993 targa for 6 years and thoroughly enjoyed it but I have itchy feet and am considering a new 997.
From the driving enjoyment, reliability and all round satisfaction points of view do you think I should change car? If so which model?
Thank you all advice welcome - please!

The price to upgrade would be considerable. A new 997/997S would be c.£65-£70k+ on the road. However, used prices have weakened significantly, so could save you up to £10k, buying 2nd hand, privately.

Other options would be a nice, late 996 3.6 'facelift' (c.£45k) or a 987 Boxster 'S' for similar money (depending on spec.). In fact, you could buy either of these as a day to day car and, with the saving on a new 997, buy a 'real' classic 911 for special occasions and fun, such as a 2.4S, 911 Club Sport, 964RS etc.

Funny, I have a 996 and I was just thinking of trading it in for a 993 even though there's less space and the handling is not as good. Just a reaction to the way I was treated by Porsche GB over corrosion on door catches. Hope the 997 is better, but time will tell.

sure you are in the right place ?
I hope so! My logic said that since 1997/8 many 993 owners have considered "should I change to a 996" and fewer a 993 to 997 transition so pose the question to the 996 forum.

It is a hard decision to make because my car has been a joy and it would be frustrating to move to another model that is less satisfying to drive , has problems and has cost me an extra £50000! But I suppose this is the question everyone asks themselves unless they are /fortunate enough to just by another porsche if the present one is unsatisfactory!
Thanks Tony

This may sound very odd, but the 993 is a happy car with loads of soul and character - almost like a friend. It is very rewarding to drive. Plus, it's also small and fits you like a glove.

The 997 is an extremely accomplished car, much more so than the 993. It's could well be the best drive out there (altho there's always room for more power)[;)]. But compared to the 993 it is bigger and more modern with all the creature comforts that brings yet it is more sanitized. It's equally rewarding to drive but in slightly more serious or businesslike way (probably because you arrive at serious speeds much sooner than you do in a 993).

The 993 and all aircooled Porsches for that matter, will always have something special about them that you will never find in modern cars. The 997 on the other hand is merely the latest and the best model that Porsche currently makes, which makes it a pretty amazing car.

So should you switch ? I don't know, it depends what you're after. Or maybe after driving the same car for 6 years it's time for a change. You'll either never look back, or one day pick up another aircooled again. I'm just not sure why this is on the 996 forum [:D]. What do they know about picking Porsches ?
